Looking to start DJing. Need advice!
Ever since I found NI's youtube page about a year ago I have had a desire to get in to Djing. I have done a lot of research and would love to own a Traktor S4 but I am a little hesitant to spend almost a grand on something i know very little about. I have played with virtual dj a little and have been playing guitar, cello, piano, upright bass, as well as dabbling with a couple other stringed instruments for the past 6 or 7. I also have taken a few music theory classes. Will an of this prior knowledge help? Should I try and find a used S4? what do you guys suggest for someone who know little looking to get in to the sport?

Being a musician does help I reckon. As long as you are 100% sure you want to get into DJing then go for it. There are other controllers out there though.

Mate .. if you learnt all those instruments then learning how to use the S4 with Traktor Pro 2 will be a doddle for you.... once you've got to grips with beatgridding your tracks then the learning curve is easy enough if you understand the basics of track structure.
Have you a decent music collection already ?....coz thats a must before you spend so much on a controller as you'll need plenty of tunes to get you started don't forget..! Love my S4.... totally changed the way i DJ for the better.. you won't be sorry..! |
Hi and welcome to the forum,
of course, every little bit of knowledge (about music) is helpful when you make something with music. harmony and harmonic mixing becomes more and more important for DJs. To buy a S4 or not depends on what you want to spend, but be sure if you sell it after a year, you'll get a nice price for it! This all-in-one solution may offer you more fun and less problems ;-) Do we have (cheaper) alternatives? Maybe, but pro equipment for pro users! So when you love music and the wish to DJ stays for longer than 1 year (now), what are you afraid of? ;-)) I started DJing with Traktor in 2008 and I don't wanna miss one single day! (before that I played with CDs and I played keyboards in a band) |
Hey, might i suggest the Hercules e2 mp3. It is only $100CAD. it will quickly let you know if this is what you want to do. it has all your basics plus 4 effects to fool around with. This is something that i have recommended to my friends who have came to see my Dj who are curious about it, of course i have let them use my s4 but it is pretty complicated your first few times.
Heres a link for the hercules mp3 e2 ----> http://www.hercules.com/uk/DJ-Music/...ontrol-mp3-e2/ There are also many other controllers between the hercules mp3 e2 price up to the s4 so you can decide how serious you want to get on your first controller. It would deffinetly help you feel comftorable with your $1000 purchase when it comes down to it. BTW* Right now the S2 is onsale for about $450CAD , this may also be suitable for you, beginners often dont need 4 channels. |
I wanna start so bad. Alot of people have parties and stuff out where I live and I wanna five everyone an awesome live DJ experience. I have many problems however, My equipment consists of the DJ battle pak, the decks aren't so bad but the mixer sucks, and I am soon purchasing the Rane 54i. I have these little gemini monitors that would be good for a nice party in a quiet library but brealy produce no sound. Also, I only have about 50 or so records...it's really hard for me to get records, and find records anywhere
