help connecting generative .ens to synth .ens

howdy! say, i am having a crummy time trying to connect a noteplayer / random generator to a synth. i am an RS4 user, but you know, that forum isn't chock full of advice...

so, i've managed to get meLodion, for instance, to connect with Kaleidon. [and many others]. i'd really like to get ruleStep [in the library as ruleStepGrid]... but it won't behave as readily as meLodion. on a hunch, i tried including the little midiOut as an instrument in Kaleidon, as well as ruleStep... but still, ruleStep will not drive my synth.

any helpful advice? helpful advice might also take the form of a heads-up on an ensemble that is more structural a la ruleStep vs meLodion [which i consider to be more random], but which connects to other ensembles in as friendly a manner as meLodion does.

maybe rick scott shld just author the definitive generative pattern-driven outputter to complement meLodion...

thanks,

you are correct, you need both "the little midiOut as an instrument in Kaleidon, as well as ruleStep..."

so why does it not work?

have a look inside the midiOut instrument. notice the pitch/gate module has a little m where there should be a light, ok? that means that the module has been muted. click on its properties
and unmute it. it should now work.

it is this little module that is needed to send the MIDI information to Kaleidon.

if you look inside meLodion, you will find one there as well.

btw, make sure the switch is also ON, in the midOut .ism

Sowari, thank you a zillion times for the reply. i understand what you are suggesting, but i am on Reaktor Session, and am unable to edit the module. i did check its Properties via the mechanism available in RS, and made sure the Mute button was off, there. it was.

so, i will try again this evening when i have more time. i suppose i need a little version of this instrument with that switch turned automatically on rather than off...

thanks again for the reply, & i'll try again later..

a little update...

well, i have gone through reconntecting everything and un-muting everything i cld get at with R Session, and have stepped through the Manual sections making connections in case i missed something. i may *still* have missed something, but alas, as yet no sound from ruleStep thru midiOut to [now] Grobian.

i've been sitting here, listening to ruleStep while pondering rachmiel's questions and trying to figure out why i can't get ruleStep to drive Grobian; and can only assume, in answer to his first question, that music is a technicality.

maybe i can make meLodion *and* Marcel [of Le Truc fame] combine to result in something quasi-rhythmic like i was wanting to get out of ruleStep. but would this make music any less of a technicality? i think not. it's a lucky thing i'm going deaf and getting Alzheimer's in the process...

the reason rulestep will not work, is because the the pitch/note
module is muted.

the only way to unmute this is to go into the structure and unmute
it.

not only do you have to turn the switch on you ALSO have to unmute this module.

as you are a session user you CANNOT do this.

try emailing the builder through the user library and ask him to send you a "session" friendly version.

or if you can wait a week (i will be away doing some gigs in france) email me through my profile and i will send you a version.

sowari, thanks for all your help. i have submitted the idea to the author as a bug report. i appreciate your offer; we will see what happens. i certainly think Ensembles that can be made into Instruments in a Reaktor Session friendly manner are important, as more & more time passes w/ Reaktor and Session in a binary orbit.

thanks again, will report back in a week & a half or so, & happy gigging!
