Reaktor 5 or lower

DESCRIPTION

This new version fixes the wrong sounding presets if you had used the R4 version in R5, plus corrects the improper range of the oscillator transpose knob. Included are both the R4 and R5 versions. Due to the clumsy version numbering the UL forces upon me, version 2.7 is actually numbered 3.1 here.

An mp3 file demoing all the presets is available, so you can listen to what this little monster can throw out while you read this.

so’fah [german] - very simplistic, yet highly versatile synth, based on Justin Tyme’s “Tube Boscillator” in conjunction with Noisewreck’s infamous noisewrecking bananalog “Feedback Cascade” filter design. It’s basically one (yes you heard me right the first time) oscillator, a filter (-cascade) and some shaping. In other words: sofa is a boring monophonic sequenced synth with a filter (which was proposed by Noisewreck in a Reaktor forum thread about tape delay simulations and Reaktor having really dull filters). Slightly modified (adjustable phase shifting @ the allpass), then hooked up just a “little” bit different now this machine kicks like a mule (watch your speakers!). The sequencer’s (do yourself a favour, go see -> panel A!) initial purpose was to provide note triggers while I was tweaking, but soon it added to the overall character of the instrument. It’s from the Reaktor library (Building Blocks), as is the oscillator (4 Waves, Sync).

Now why is this thing called sofa? sofa stands for Self Oscillating Filter Aparatus and is easily operated in all sorts of comfortable positions, even in complete darkness (battery operation for outdoor use will be implemented in one of the next updates or so, Im still waiting on the convector springs...). You select a preset and start twisting them knobs. And that’s about it - sofa spits out new original sounds just like that.

Like all my other instruments (not in the UL), this one too features extensive tooltips and some explanatory text modules here and there as why I did certain things. I wish all builders would provide information this way, because we all would benefit.

The original version 1.0 was released Monday, March 14th 2005.
Added VST automation and let the UserLib screw up the version numbering: March 16th
Connected the Modulometer’s scale illumination: March 17th.
Revised the pdf: March 18th
Added section on assigning hardware controllers to pdf: March 19th
Reworked the automation, including soft takeover: March 20th

Includes 99 snapshots! (So what you'll hear in the mp3 is about 1,5 secs per snap...)

Years later and I still use this, in my own ripped-apart and transmuted form. One of the most essential downloads.

Ironically, I've been having a hard time saving up for a sofa (actual furniture) because of money going towards software. Go figure, a piece of software named SOFA may have just helped me save a few bucks for the piggybank by providing hours of (free) entertainment. Lovely.

Well i'm sure you wouldn't just cut me off like that jo.I sent you three or four mails over the last couple of months that either didn't get through..... or some ignorant pea brain is blocking my mail(this isn't the first time this has happened to me). What i really wanted to say to you was that i disagree, nagging people will get you somewhere and you can bring changes. You are free to see it either way, yes i can bring changes or no i can not.Which ever way you choose will be the truth for you. Also..... i wasn't pointing out the falseness in other peoples lives in any direct fashion.I was pointing it out in a non'direct way by purely being myself. There's a big difference.

David - the one on the last page of the pdf should work. There have been hickups on my ISP's side and / or my spam filtering, though. Make shure to include 'Reaktor' in the subject line, that should get you through.

Yes, we would all benefit jo.You put everyone else to shame with your tooltips ,on the panel and inside the structure.

Well, I think there are enough 'tonal' synths already - that's why I created more presets from the "other side". However, some of them feature the more conventional side of sofa... feel free to make your own. Finally: happy holidays y'all! (as if someone would read this in time ;o))

Thanks, Jace :o)) Michael - there's not much to understand, sort of. It is all about twisting knobs and experiment. However, there's extensive tooltips to get to grips in a more traditional way. I have found Sofa to sound completely different in R5 (for whatever reasns), regarding the presets. The available .mp3 was generated using it in R4 standalone, so R5 users can compare. I will, eventually, work on an update incorporating a programmable sequencer. Skipped the battery mode feature, though... couldn't get the darn thing to open.

Hi Donald, while the arp is on, incoming MIDI wil transpose the sequence. Not sure what you mean by omni. The modulometer sometimes gets overloaded with peaks and then sticks. To get it working again, simply click on it. Some of the behaviour changed in R5... will revise it to have a programmable sequencer, and maybe a true arpeggiator. Only this will be done when my schedule allows. Are you using R4 or R5? (You did check the A view, I suppose?)

Really love the OSC. vary original sounds and I can't wait to use it. Just a few things I noticed though. I have to turn off the Arp to play it manually, It will only play when I have it in Omni and is the little battery meter supposed to peak and stay at the top. really the only things that concern me is being forced to play it in omni mode. Great synth though. I hope to see more from you. if it helps Im running a mac G4 with a sonet upgrade and stock sound card on OS 10.4

First - thanks very much for this - great fun. In answer to your question in the excellent pdf at the end .. the Instrument Up/Down in the IDS menu moves the group of automatable parameters in the selected Instrument up above the next highest group of parameters belonging to another instrument in the overall Ensemble. That way, if u have 5 instruments in an Ensemble, each with their own set of automatable parameters, u can re-order the sequence in which those parameters are presented to your host's parameter automation list (works a treat in Sonar 4 anyway). Take a look at the Reaktor 4.1 manual addendum in your program folder (on my PC this is found at C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\Reaktor 4\Reaktor_41_manual_addendum.pdf)

Thanks, Jo. That did it! I just go into the invisible knob's properties and enter whichever MIDI CC I want. BTW, I think the reason for the discrepancy in our Logic experience is that I'm using Logic 7 Pro. I just see a very long list of useless parameter numbers when I look at the list in Automation for this plug. Anyhow, who cares? I've got Sofa automation to mess around with now! Next, you ask? Heavy saturation, please... ;-)

Okay - have spent most of the day trying to figure out how to elegantly work around the multipicture limitations. Finally came up with a rather brilliant solution (...), reworked the whole automation section, including soft takeover, prewired sofa to controller numbers 14 -26, updated the pdf and upped the version number to 2.0. Now what? :o))
tymes2
@ Ned - over here I see 30 parameters appearing with their respective names (e.g. sofa:...A mod) and another 15 listed as unused. I don't know what's causing the behaviour you see, but it definitely is nothing *I* can change. Regarding your second post - this is exactly what you should do! Note - the included pdf has detailed information on how I worked around the fact that multipictured knobs can't be automated. I will update the pdf to include the following: Here's what's needed to assign controllers: open ensemble properties, make sure "Activate MIDI In" is checked. Open instrument properties, and check "Activate MIDI IN". In VST mode, 'MIDI IN Device' then switches to plugin automatically, in standalone mode you'll have to select the appropriate device. Selection should be automatic in AU mode, too. Now "show in structure" the knob you want to automate. Next to its snap value module you'll find the (invisible in panel) parameter modding control, named "@ mod" where @ stands for the parameter's name. Click on it, click MIDI learn and move the hardware controller you want to assign - done. @tom - I hope this keeps you from "defacing this beauty" :o)) I have no experience with Logic's quick access... let me know if these lines fix the probs! @ ALL - read the funking pdf!!!

Ideally, I could just pick a knob, go into its properties, and change its MIDI controller to any one I wish.
Ned Bouhalassa
Jo, I'm using Logic 7.0.1, and all I see when I look at the list of automation parameters on the Sofa track/instrument is P001 to P1000. That's a lot of parameters!!!!
Thomas Watson
Hey Jo, nice work! I think what Ned means is that we are accustomed to assigning various midi controllers to various knobs, and delightfully tweaking them in real time. The way you managed to make automation parameters appear in the list is very cool, but in logic using the quick access, it means we can only automate one parameter at a time using a midi controller. If I am missing something, i would be grateful to be informed of a decent automation method. Thanks ! :D

amazingly wonderful interface-design, awesome presets with a slight touch of humour (libertango? areal? metope?) and a killer-sound with a stunning factor of inspiration. it's unique, it's worth a 11 out of 10 and it's - well - just a KILLER! Vielen Dank, definitiv eines der nützlichsten und genialsten Ensembles für Reaktor mit einem der schönsten Userinterfaces/GUIs, die ich gesehen habe. Actually my no1 ensemble ;-)

tymes2
Thanks, Fleet Mouse. Actually, that's intended and part of the (sound) design - there's a sinus (math) module just before the out, which drives the whole thing like crazy in many presets. If you turn down the level (as with a master) the sound will change drastically. You can try that with the right one of the two red knobs - that's functioning as an output control, while the left (red) one blends between sinusoidal treatment (right position) and untreated (left position) signal. Unfortunately, I have no possibility to try it on Windows, but I would hope it sounds the same?!
Peter Dines
Fantastic sound and ridiculously light CPU usage. My only complaint is some of the patches are waaaaaay too loud. Add a master instrument and turn down the volume, or put in a limiter. I'm using Windows here, maybe that's the problem - I'm assuming you programmed it on a Mac since you mention a G4.
tymes2

Forgot to mention this one's veeeeery easy on your cpu! It eats about 12% on my old 500MHz G4 :-)))
