Solina-V String Ensemble v1.0

By Hugo Portillo
Solina-V String Ensemble v1.0 by Hugo Portillo
Solina-V String Ensemble
This has become an obsession for the last two months and since I could not take it out of my mind I had to do it: to create an emulation of the king of the string machines (or queen for the Spanish speakers): the revered Solina String Ensemble.

I hope that at least I have captured the essence of that instrument since I neither own nor plan to own a real Solina SE.

I based my design on a variety of samples and websites with information about it.

It is a very simple instrument to use. The only thing to remember is to change the snapshots from the Ensemble section.

Thanks again to Mark Smart for his wonderful ARP Omni chorus/ensemble and to Hertz SM for his Flat Knobs. The rest of GUI is my design.

And of course thanks to Eminent/Solina for creating such a wonderful machine.

I hope you like it.

  14. Graham Miller (2007-03-07 05:22:03):
wicked and totally original GUI. way to go! i can't believe no one's done the stomp box idea yet...
  15. Neil Pollard (2007-03-07 13:40:46):
Arise Sir Hugo! LOVE the stomp box idea. I've come over all Moon Safari. 10
  16. daniel battaglia (2007-03-07 17:32:04):
i love this, its a nice compliment and better sounding even than the official R5 string machine (Equinoxe).

thanks for making the FX a seperate .ins, which makes it more modular (both the synth and FX are worth saving seperately, they are top notch!).
  17. daniel battaglia (2007-03-07 17:34:34):
one note, i probably personally WOULDNT have made the synth into 2 instruments, though, as this goes against what i said, making it almost impossible to easily save and load as an .ism. perhaps one ism would be better, or even making both parts a stacked macro for reason-like control, or use the A/B views (you can seave these in opanelsets, too, so that ctrl+1 is fornt panel, ctrl+2 is back panel).
  18. Jonathan Style (2007-03-07 17:51:08):
I Agree with Mr. Battaglia on ens. would be perfect using the A/B panels. However with that Aside I really like this ensemble. The sound is very good, it is very effective. All the GUI's in Reaktor should be so appealing. Kudos on that one this alone. Thanks for sharing.
  19. Hugo Portillo (2007-03-07 20:07:03):
Thanks to all for your comments.

The A/B panels is a great idea. I don't know how I did not think about it. But definitely, in the next revision I will incorporate some changes.

Also, all the credit for the FXs section goes to NI. The Kleinstein phaser is the closest emulation to a EH's Small Stone I ever heard :-)

    Cheers.
  20. Paul Crossman (2007-03-08 17:54:32):
    top drawer! :-)

  39. Rob Janssen (2007-06-09 18:25:49):
Very well done. Now I no longer have to drag my own String Ensemble to the studio anymore :).

  43. Brian Monroney (2007-09-08 21:17:55):
Thank you SO much for creating this. I needed an authentic 70's string machine sound for some production music and this NAILS it!!!
  44. Jim Hurley (2007-09-13 23:48:43):
    Great emulation.
  45. Christopher Soulos (2007-10-16 12:31:50):
I owned a Solina String Machine. And an Ibanez delay and phaser pedal.
    I paid $100 for it in 1980.

When I separated from my wife, I went home to get this and she had thrown it out. Why? I'll never know. It wasn't important to her.

I really miss that keyboard. It takes you on a trip, even without pedals.

This emulation is a superb piece of workmanship and care.

All praise to you, Hugo Portillo.

    The dream is alive again.

    Thanks
  46. François Girard (2007-11-01 23:45:06):
I'm amazed by this one...It sounds superb, really...The warmth is astounding for a virtual analog...I was not fond of the equinoxe ensemble in Reaktor 5 and this one is far better...so far...The best emulation I ever heard in all categories! and it's so nice for my cpu...You've made a masterwork Hugo!
  47. Adam Deibert (2007-11-07 02:33:51):
The gui is beautiful. The sound is right on. I've been waiting 7 years for someone to build a string synth this good in reaktor. Thanks!
  48. Evan Harmon (2007-12-08 02:47:42):
Love this ensemble. I've been looking for these sounds!

  50. Michael Hall (2008-01-14 00:15:24):
Thanks for building such an easy to use and great sounding ensemble. It's inspired me to consider completing an ongoing orchestral composition using only synth sounds.
  51. Delmas Yann (2008-01-17 00:07:30):
THank you for making this. Very nice sound & interface.
  52. jeremy herpe (2008-01-29 22:33:28):

    This is nuts!! so warm.
  54. Brother Rafen (2008-03-06 22:54:28):
Really great ensemble, really captures the warmth (and potential Harshness) of the Original! Wow, now all i need is an emulation of either Polymoog of this stature and i will be SET :)
  55. michael huckaby (2008-06-02 06:41:18):
    AMAZING !

    10 / 10

Suddenly I sound like Jean Michel Jarre!... well, almost ;) Great work!
  70. Timon Pumba (2010-04-20 16:52:11):
Wrote on the wrong ensemble of yours yesterday..oops...THIS is my favorite soft-string machine of all time and has been used much by me. Your last one was brilliant, too, of course of course but this one with the lusty GUI and all...your passion comes through your work! Curious: why didn't you use the chorus effect out of the Eminent ensemble? Did you not think it works with that instrument?
  71. Robert Stevenson (2010-07-09 15:55:19):
I always (used to) think it doesn't matter what it looks like its what it sounds like is important .... then one sees something like this .... oh wow I haven't had time yet to plug this into Reaktor and allready I'm loving it.
  72. Carlos Benavides (2010-07-14 15:52:43):
It's adorable. I place it inside thick mixes with tons of reaktor kits and a thick guitar and is sits very clearly in the mix, which indicates how well constructed this machine is. The JM Jarre thing is downright cute. THe pads are adorable... you got a 10 from me! Interface adorable as well... many thanks and CONGRATS
  73. Mark Bonnington (2010-07-16 22:37:39):
    Very useful sounds from this.
  74. rick bull (2010-08-28 15:50:18):
    elegant work!
