Word Description
ASIO Stands for 'Audio Stream Input/Output' and is a transfer protocol for low latency audio in a digital environment.
AU Stands for Audio Unit. It is a plug-in protocol and a interface standard with which you connect electronic musical instruments and studio plug-ins to hosts.
Cache It is a memory location for data to be accessed faster. Different components of the computer are equipped with a cache (e.g. the CPU, the Hard Drive).
CPU CPU stands for Central Processing Unit and is the component in a computer that interprets computer program instructions and processes data.
DFD DFD stands for “direct from disk“ and is a technique for playing back large instruments and samples without loading them entirely into RAM. In fact, only the first portion of each sample is loaded into RAM permanently; the rest is read from the computer’s hard disk while playing the instrument.
DRM Stands for Digital Rights Management and refers to a technical procedure to restrict access orusage of digital data.
GUI Stands for Graphical User Interface. It is the interface that visually enables people to operate with a computer or software running on a computer via icons on the screen. More plain, the GUI is the surface of the software you see on your monitor.
IRQ Stands for Interrupt Request
Latency As with any digital device (including hardware signal processors) that convert audio to data and back again, a computer adds a certain amount of delay when processing audio signals. This delay is referred to as Latency.
MIDI Stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and is a standard real time protocol that enables electronic musical instruments, computers and other equipment to communicate, control and synchronize with each other.
Note off A MIDI event which stops a note. The value of this event is always 0.
Note on A MIDI event which starts a note. The value of this event determines the velocity of a note.
RAM RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is a type of data storage used in computers. RAM is used as 'main memory' or primary storage as it allows for fast access on data.
Sample Rate Sample Rate or Sampling Frequency defines the number of samples per second (or per other unit).
SSE Stands for Streaming SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) Extensions
VST Stands for Virtual Studio Technology and refers to an interface standard for connecting audio software and studio plug-ins to hosts.
