Update installer error: 'Invalid Drive' (PC)

Hinweis: Eine deutschsprachige Fassung dieses Artikels finden Sie als PDF unterhalb des englischen Textes.

If you disconnect the drive where your Native Instruments products or parts of them (e. g. the KONTAKT library) are installed from your computer and connect another volume, it may occur that this volume takes the former drive letter of the NI product volume. If you reconnect the NI product volume now, it will get another drive letter.

Once you try to install an update for an NI product installed on the NI product volume now, you receive an error message like the one below:
Error_Invalid_Drive
This happens because the update installer does not find the NI product installation under the expected drive letter.

In order to fix this, you have to manually restore the original drive letter for the NI product volume as described in the subsequent steps.

1) Open the Windows Start menu and right-click the Computer icon. In the menu that opens, choose Manage (see screenshot). This will open the Computer Management panel.
Computer_Menu
2) In the Computer Management panel, select Disk Management from the sidebar (see screenshot):
Disk_Management
The Volume column in the Disk Management panel contains entries for all volumes available on the computer.

You first have to assign the new volume to another letter to make the original drive letter available to the NI product volume again.

In this example, NI Stick (G:) is the volume containing the installation of the Native Instruments product we want to update. Its former drive letter 'F:' has been taken by the new volume 'USB Stick'. We have to assign 'USB Stick' to another letter to make the letter 'F:' available for NI product volume 'NI Stick' again.

3) Right-click the entry of the volume that has taken the letter of your NI product volume and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths....

In this example, we are going to change the letter of the new volume 'USB Stick (F:)' (see screenshot):
Menu_Drive_Letter
4) In the window that opens, click the button Change.... In the next window, select a letter from the rear part of the alphabet to make sure both volumes do not interfere with each other again.

In this example, we choose 'Z:' (see screenshot):
Change_Drive_Letter
5) Now the original drive letter of the NI product volume is available again. Go back to the Disk Management panel, right-click the entry of your NI product volume and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths....  Change the drive letter back to the original one - it is the same letter shown in the error message you received.

In this example, we assign the NI product volume 'NI Stick' back to its original drive letter 'F:'.
