How to install NI applications on Windows 64-bit systems

General Information
There are two different Program Files folders on Windows 64-bit systems: "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)". 64-bit applications are automatically installed into the "Program Files" folder while 32- bit applications go to the folder "Program Files (x86)".
This means, you can install and run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications on a 64-bit Windows system.
Installation of NI applications
Native Instruments music production software can be used both in standalone mode or as a plug-in inside a host sequencer. Most NI plug-ins are compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit host sequencers. Therefore, different versions of the same application have to be installed on the computer (standalone, VST 32-bit, VST 64-bit and RTAS if you want to use the software as a plug-in in Pro Tools). The following section explains how to proceed through the installation of the different program parts.
Standalone:
The NI installer automatically suggests an installation path for the standalone application, depending on wether it is 32-bit or 64-bit (see above).
Default path 32-bit:
~ Program Files (x86) > Native Instruments > *Program Name*
Default path 64-bit:
~ Program Files > Native Instruments > *Program Name*
It is recommended to install the software to this path.
VST plug-ins:
VST plug-ins can be installed to any location on your hard drive, but it is very important that the host sequencer "knows" where they are installed in order to load them.
We recommend to define fixed folders for all your VST plug-in installations, especially when you are using your plug-ins in different host programs. It is important to define separate folders for 32-bit and 64-bit plug-in installations, e.g. as shown below:
32-bit plug-in version:
~Program Files (x86) > VST 32
64-bit plug-in version:
~Program Files > VST 64
The VST installation path can be defined during the installation of your NI product (see example screenshot):
No matter where you install your VST plug-ins, always make sure that this location is defined as a VST folder in your sequencer so it can load the plug-ins. For more information on this, please refer to the manual of your sequencer.
RTAS plug-in:
The RTAS path is fixed for all applications and cannot be changed.
