DESCRIPTION

Padrone is a synth that is specialized in pads and drones. With its various not very common features (like the drone mode and the table-driven envelopes) it is capable of creating a variety of sounds. Because the envelope speeds are BMP related and can be set to ‘cycle mode’ it can also create rhythmic patterns (maximum 64 steps per cycle).
Besides pads and drones, it can also produce Ringmodulation sounds (bells for example) and ‘semi-physical modeling’ sounds.

Removed the external link (I don't have access to it anymore) and uploaded it again here. Changed the version number to reflect this change, but actually it is version 2.0 with extra presets.

Unbelievably lovely. I am, as others are, concerned about the CPU usage, but -- my god man! I've been searching for a way to create sounds like this, well, since my first visit to a planetarium. Wonderful stuff. I'll be buying Xantos, if only to spur you on to continue work on Padrone.

ah, by 'spike' i meant processor spike. :) if you want a guinnea pig for Xantos R5, let me know! i was the one way back when that asked if it'd ever have a version which MIDI'd out to soft instruments rather than / in addition to samples. the samplesets i have been creating by hand and using are extracted [using AudioFinder] from GarageBand / Logic instrument notes played. they sound quite nice. :) but i'd also love to hear Xantos drive Carbon 2, or OOOH! if it cld be made to drive SteamPipe2, that baby could generate both organic-ish beats as well as rich tones. and then of course the way wld be paved for it to also drive Rachmiel's SteamPipe remix. ;) anyway, go go AuReality! - aqaraza

One of my favorite ensembles by one of my favorite ensemble developer. I hope you will consider updating and will help in anyway possible if you still work with Reaktor. With it's new features and capabilities someone of your talent should be involved with Reaktor 5 - if you are still interested?

Hi Heath Rezabek/Aqaraza, Thank you for your kind words. I wanted to let you know that I indeed do intend to make a R5 version of Xantos. I just got R5 in my mailbox and next weekend I want to check it out. It may take a while before I get used to it :-) but when I do I will definitely port Xantos to it. Not sure what you meant with the 'spike issues' though? Regards, Paul

just a note to say that, whether you upgrade to R5 or not, i for one love Xantos and am one of its secret greatest admirers / satisfied purchasers. :) over time i have slowly begun to colonize its well-structured sample-set with my own, and always love what comes out. so i hope you do upgrade to R5 someday, so i can upgrade to Xantos 3! ;) and of course grab this once the spike issues seem to have settled out. keep the faith, AuReality; clearly you have some secret admirers out here! - aqaraza

35 sounds high unless he's revised it or done an actual manual since he originally posted it. Mine's 31 MB. If you're talking about downloading from the NI link, he states that the link in the description is the link for the ensemble. The library only permits uploads of 8 MB or less.

Ummm, not sure what's going on... I just downloaded this twice and it just seems to be an empty ensemble titled 'New.ens'. Any probs with the NI server?

Re: update, the major thing for you would be CPU savings. Padrone uses 10% less CPU using R5.1 than it does using R4. that is before changing your switching system, away from your use of MIDI active controllers (that saves even more CPU). i was suspicious of R5 before it came out but i have to say it is really worth it (the update price has also gone down). there are loads of new (unadvertised) macros in the building blocks. there some very useful modules such as snap value array, mouse area and displays, IC sends and receives (much better than using MIDI)... then there is Core. for me R5 is the most stable version of Reaktor that i have worked with (i have been using it since 2.0.4).

To answer the CPU load question: yes, Padrone is a CPU hog, and it is mainly due to the event smoothing applied to the Envelopes output. Disabling the smoothing will reducem the CPU usage with 75% (!). Another way to reduce CPU usage is lowering the Control Rate setting in Reaktor. However, both methods will greatly reduce the usability of Padrone: you will get clearly audible transition artefacts when the envelopes run from one step to another (not for every preset though). If this doesn't bother you, then just connect the envelopes output (Table module) to the rbMap input directly. Or lower the Control rate. Maybe anyone knows a better solution for this? To answer the 'why not a R5 version of Padrone and/or Xantos?': can anyone give me a good reason, or maybe even multiple good reasons to upgrade to R5? When it was released I was not impressed. But maybe I was wrong, and is it indeed the best Reaktor version ever? What will I gain? And what will I loose? Thanks for the feedback. Paul

It's really so fine. I like much your unit but I think that it deserves to be update in R5. I register it in my preferred sets because I like much the possibility of creating evolutionary sound structures.

Lovely. But why is this ensemble so heavy on CPU? I took out the FX section, reduced the # of voices to 2, but it's still massive...

Oh- and I also replaced the reverb with the one from Xantos. You don't have the modulation happening, but the CPU load's negligable. If you have the original Padrone, you can put that reverb in instead as well.The rewiring of the switch still applies.

As to why the switch doesn't seem to work all the time; the "switch" is actually a button driving a controller which in turn drives the switches. It was the only way to have paired switches in R3 (when Padrone was first built), and R4 tends to "forget" ICs. If you delete the on button and the controller, you can then make one of the switches visible and set it to toggle. Make that the master and the other the slave. If you still need the controllers sent (for use in a host, for instance), turn on panel to MIDI. It's a good idea to do that with all the fx on switches. I did that with the original Padrone, and the same concept works here.

The spikes are caused by the reverb, Jo- there's something strange happening there. While the CPU usage is still somewhat high, shutting off the reverb brings it down considerably and it doesn't spike then.

The correct URL is http://fraggle.eccoo.rug.nl/~paolo/reaktor/padrone2.0.zip However - in 5.1 (OS 10.4.4) the sound is distorted, and cpu usage is way up on my 2GHz DP G5. Many snaps cause overloads... the first ensemble that is acting strange for me.

It's not working here either, Paul. A shame- Padrone's still the ensemble I use the most of any Reaktor ensemble (including my own). If you're having hosting problems, I'll be glad to host it for you

I also loved your AIM and Xantos, hope your server comes back from wherever it went. I actually have a r4 version of this but mine is only 3.1 MB so this must be something new?

Maybe some of you remember my Padrone ensemble (it's been a while...) I made a new version of this pad/drone/rhythmic ensembles for *Reaktor 4* (sorry, don't have R5 and don't think I will purchase it)
