Problem with latest 1.0.4 update. I get the message:-

Cannot proceed with this update, because the application cannot be found in the stored installation directory. If you have manually renamed or removed the application, move it back to its original location, then start this update installer again. Alternatively, use the original full installer to install before using this update installer.

I have not manually renamed or removed the application. FM8 was working fine with Cubase5 on my PC.

I am not sure what is meant by "the original full installer". The only full installer that I have for FM8 is the 1.0.3 version. So I unistalled FM8 and them reinstalled version 1.0.3 But I still got the same message when then trying to update with 1.0.4 again.

Another question:- 1.0.4, unlike 1.0.3, cannot be run as a full installer. Why is this?

Solution for cannot proceed with this update

I had the same problem with the FM8 update installer not wanting to install.

I'm running Mac OS 10.5.7 on a MacBook and have Komplete 5 installed.

In the past I did rename my main drive.

Here's how I got the update to install:

    1. Browse to the folder /Library/Preferences
That's the library folder at the root of your HD, not the one in your user folder.
    2. Locate the file com.native-instruments.FM8.plist
    3. Double click com.native-instruments.FM8.plist
    4. The file will open in the Property List Editor application If it doesn't then control+click the file and under the 'open with' menu choose Property List Editor.
    5. Locate the InstallDir row and check if the value contains the right path. If it doesn't then change it to the current path of your FM8 application folder. Since I had changed my hard disks name in the past the name in the InstallDir row still contained the name of the hard disk at the time of the first installation.

Note that the path starts with the hard disk's name and that each folder is seperated with a colon :
The path should also end with a colon :

    7. Close the file and save it

You should now be able to install the FM8 update.

Didn't work for me (Mac 10.5.7). Since editing the plist, it now says there is no installation of FM8. If I launch FM8, it appears unregistered (ie the 'activate/buy' window appears). In Service Center, it's disappeared.

I said this before till I'm blue in the face and sick to my stomach, but NI's activation/copy protection (even for updates now) is frustrating, bug-ridden rubbish that only serves to stop legitimate customers from using what they've paid their hard-earned money for. Users of cracked versions don't have this hassle, only the honest paying customers. I hope one day they'll wake up. Sigh.

In the meantime, I guess I need to somehow uninstall, reinstall, edit plists, phone support, etc, etc, just like with Kontakt. Great.

OK, I maybe ranted too soon. Just stuck the install disk in and 'reinstalled' (without uninstalling anything) - of course I ran the leopard installer patcher first - and FM8 was back as before, and showing up in Service Center ready to re-activate (can't help wondering what would happen if NI went out of business or stopped their end of the online activation, but...). Once it was reactivated, I was able to run the installer for the update no problem. Now all seems working fine.

Still, can't help thinking why do other software providers' updates just work, when NI ones are always such a complex Kafka-esque nightmare. It's a good thing FM8 and Kontakt are great products!

The same thing happened to me on PC installing the latest update of Kontakt (3.5) and of FM8. It was refusing to install because I didn't have the standalone version installed, only the VST one.

Solution: Re-install FM8 from the disc including the standalone version. Then run the update and everything should be fine.

NI recently changed the type of update exe they use and the latter refuse to run without the standalone version installed.

That's the crazy thing ! no problem to install the FM8 update on macbook with os X 5.7,
but same message like you on my G5 with tiger.11. Impossible to install this FM8 1.0.4 update, it's installed standalone & plugins and no move operate since the first version of FM8.
Very disapointing. Has N.I an official solution ? It's boring to re-install from original disc.
    No sense.

I'm hope that next update for future logiciel (R6, AB5, KORE 2.1...) would'nt works like this. Please N.I, you can be more simple with install and activation process for your customers. Better for everybody ! Cheers.
