Hi Tried Sampling today... All samples recorded from external are 16 bit only. Not so good,, Any thing I am missing ?

    Thanks

Hmm, yeah right. I just checked and had a look through the manual and couldn't find any option for setting the bit depth of the sampler. There's an option for selecting the "export audio" bit depth but not the sampling. Very odd.

Maybe i'm missing something too...

I dunno from my understanding sampling material from other media like cd's or vinyl at anything other than 16 bit would just add unused information to the sample. It does export in 24 bit but then maybe you possess some stems that were recorded in 24 bit and you wouldnt want to diminish the recording by bouncing to 16bit.

It's only cd's that are restricted to 16 bit.

Also what about internal resampling? OR using a microphone?

you should be able to get a good sound using 16 bit every musical masterpiece u have ever heard is 16 bit or less with respect to the format in which u heard the song.

so i would not loose sleep over this , focus in building ur musical skill/sound not the technicalities of using higher bit rates as these will do very little towards making ur music better and more enioyable to listen to

Most masterpieces were recorded on Tape... THEN put to 16 Bit CD.

The BETTER the original quality the better when downgrading it.

In the case of today.... The higher the quality in production the better the sound when going to iTunes.

Done my tests... And lots of em the past 16 years.

Recording i.e. a Kick or vocal @ 24bit then down sizing it to 16 to the CD yields MUUUUCH better results than recording the same source 16 Bit then burning it to a CD...

You should try that. Of course, if you cant hear the diff. then that is ok. But I can :)

The really odd thing is that Maschine allows you to record higher sample rates but not bit depth.

A lot of audio experts argue that higher sample rates are pointless as they record frequencies beyond the range of human hearing (claiming that it adds to sound is entering the world of pseudo science). Whilst it is pretty much universally accepted that 24 bit recordings are superior, especially in terms of lower noise floor and greater dynamic range.

So it seems odd that NI will allow you to record in "pointlessly" high sample rates but not in potentially useful bit depths.

Always thought this was silly. Still can't believe it won't support 24 bit sampling.

It's a failure on NIs part... 24 bit has been the STANDARD bit depth for audio production for how many years now?

Does anyone know what the internal sampling bit depth is? Also does Maschine truncate 24bit samples (when loading from the bowser) or does it retain the original source quality?

Maschine operates at 32 bit float. It can handle 24 bit files. Internal bouncing is 32 bit float but external export is truncated from 32 bit float to 24 bit. It is only the sample recorder that is restricted to 16 bit.

This is the key point from tweakheadz.

"The most important point is saved for last, and I've said it before, and will again. Great music recorded on a crappy cassette deck will win more hearts than a turd polished at 24/192. Your talent is more important than anything else, and you can't buy that. So remember to practice, work on your technique, when you can afford to, upgrade your signal path, and then when the pearly gates of Sound Quality open, then consider 24/96 as you would a nice finish on a well-crafted piece of art. "

thats a nice thought. But with that logic we should use pots and pans...or at most a cheap Casio keyboard.

    hey!.. dont be like that!

I want that private Island i am entitled to, and, and.. and.. well, i mean...
i mean.. its all NI's fault i dont have it!

i now have 24,000 presets from the cheap upgrade to Komplete so i cant blame the lack of sounds anymore (oh..pfft)
THEN i now have timestretch so i cant bitch about that any more! (damn it..that was the thing really holding me back)

So YES! its gotta the *only 16 bit sampling* ..after all.....

NFW its me and my total lack of musical talent that has me whining in forums from my bedroom.

Its 16 bit sampling dude so its NI's fault..

oh, wait.. mebbe its the midi issues..........?

Maschine's internal bouncing (drag & drop) is in 32bit. If you export the sample, you can choose between 8bit, 16bit and 24bit file resolution.
