I've checked a number of other posts and i can get around this problem.

When i go in ableton to select in the drop down to input the midi from Maschine, it only gives me either the Pre or Post effect options, and the tutorial im watching it saying i need to select the third option, "maschine" which doesn't exist. I also only have stereo 1/2 options rather then 1-16.

Im on a MIDI channel not Audio

    See here:

The tutorials routing is also different as hes demoing 2.2 version, and im on 2.6.9.

I just want to route my chord midi from Maschine to Ableton........

Are you opening both software as standalone and use the Link or do you use maschine as a plugin in a midi channel?

Why don't you update to 2.7.2?

It sounds to me like you aren't using the External Instrument in Ableton....you need add the External instrument on a separate Ableton track for each Midi channel you want to import from maschine, then change the routing accordingly on each chooser in the External instrument.

Strangely I don't need to do that. Except if I want to route a maschine group to a drum rack. But it is still a working solution...

Turns out the source of the problem was I loaded Machine as an AU. It needs to be a VST....
