While I totally understand the rationale behind this change in gain control behavior I must say it's a big step backwards for my workflow (I'm using S4 that has an endless gain knob). Here is why:

    1. I'd really prefer to immediately see _total_ gain applied as I'm loading next track into a deck. Many reasons for that - the stored autogain value could be screwed, channel gain could have been slightly adjusted while playing previous track and so on. I know my tracks very well and I can immediately say if total gain (that accounts to whatever stored autogain value is) makes any sense. I can take it from there and make further adjustments if needed (just like in a car I'd prefer speedometer to show the actual speed, and not having 2 mods - the current speed limit and how much I'm going over/under).

    2. I would not want to take a chances to screw stored autogain values during the gig. Yes, new control could provide a very convenient way to adjust autogain when prepping the tracks, but during the gig I'd prefer to have it locked. I would just load the track and use stored value as a starting point, adjusting a bit if needed w/o overriding stored value (imagine previous track ending being louder or quieter than _average_ gain value calculated for that previous track).

Now, what options do I have with a new gain control:

    a) keep it in channel gain mode. Now to have a picture of a total gain I'd have to temporary switch to "autogain" mode, look at autogain value, remember it and go back. More - if track is locked I would not have a visual indication besides tiny number underneath. It all takes time and extra efforts, could be hard to pull especially in stressful situations.

    b) keep in in autogain mode. Here I'm screwed too, because for one thing I would not be able to adjust gain if track is locked, for another if I decide to adjust it I would override stored value, which is last of my intentions.

Having said that I think with a few minor tweaks NI team could make everyone happy. Here is what I think would be the least intrusive change:

    1. introduce "reset channel gain upon loading next track" option. Self descriptive and I believe was proposed by a several people in this thread already.

    2. introduce "show total gain on a gui control" option. Could be signified by a "red" dot or something. For endless gain knob users this would work perfectly, basically the behavior would be almost identical to pre-2.6 version. For people with absolute gain knob I'd personally make GUI control show value with offset from hardware knob position, but there are other options how to handle it.

Or one could simply introduce "pre-2.6 gain control behavior" option and eliminate blue/orange dots completely in such mode.

P.S. I wish 2.5.x would support Z1, the sole reason I've decided to try 2.6.4 on the mac I'm using for prepping the track is because I'm thinking about buying one, otherwise 2.5 was working perfectly for my workflow ...

    Cheers!

    agree.

got to go through a lots of my library tracks to adjust gain manually as traktor decided to lower gain for some of them. i ve been playing at gigs and thinking - whatta heck, why do i have to apply gain on a mixer for a certain tracks while it supposed to be OK @ 12 o\clock?!? then back at home last weekend ive checked tunes i remember sounded quiet - and all of them had a gain value in a range minus -3.4 to minus -2,5 :D that was a lot of double clicking to return back to Zero :D
