I'm about to buy a new machine, I see that I can get a pretty nice deal on a Macbook "air", soooo..... I know that 2GB is the minimum requirement for Reaktor, but does anybody have experience with this, and, with this amount, how well does Reaktor run for you? Is this a bad idea? Thank you in advance :)

You wanna run Reaktor in NI Maschine? If so you probally wont be able to run a lot of instances at the same time with 2GB.

No, probably not in Maschine. (sorry, by machine, I just meant computer :))Just Reaktor as a standalone. It would be nice to have the option later, but by the time I learn how to build in Reaktor I will probably be ready to upgrade again :) Do you normally have to run a lot of instances with Maschine?

The more RAM you have, the happier your computer will be. Do not skimp on RAM.

Will latest OSX run smoothly on 2GB? And what is then left for your apps?

4 gig is considered a minimum for just about any computer work, especially audio. The more ram the better - the computer will be able to better run up to it's capability. Scrimp on hard drive space if you must but never ram. And remember that a number of the newer Mac laptops can't be user upgraded as regards ram as the ram is soldered in and the cases are glued shut.

For Reaktor, CPU power is very important. RAM is important too but not to the extent that it is in a full-up sampler like Kontakt. That being said, I wouln't buy a new computer with only 2 GB of RAM. It is pretty much at it's shelf life already. Some of the newest ensembles (razor, for example) can push the CPU pretty hard. I haven't used the Mac Air but isn't it designed to be thin, light, cool and have a long battery life? Maybe not the best for power applications. Just something to consider.

fwiw, i just bought a new Macbook Pro and doubled the Ram to 8 GB.

RAM is needed for Ensembles that use lots of long samples. Until quite recently i was using a 2008 Macbook which had only 2 GB of RAM - it was okayish.... but what you need to think about is if you want to use Reaktor in a DAW, and that is where you will get issues.

a Macbook Air might be okay for using Reaktor and only Reaktor for live work, but I would not consider it good enough if that is your only computer.

So, I'm going to go with either the Macbook pro, or the "unibody" but both have adjustable ram. I'm not too worried about the year, should I be? My computer is about 6 years old now and it still runs great, (Dell Inspiron 1525) I just have the chance to finally switch to mac, so I'm going to take it! If everything falls through, I can just sell it and take a bit of a loss. I don't think that'll happen though. I like apple a lot more, and all of my friends say they would never switch back either :)

Thanks for the help everybody :)
