I wonder if (and when) there will be a VST3 version of Kontakt2 working with the upcoming Nuendo 4. Currently using Kontakt 1.5.3 as secondary sampler on a slave machine and plan to upgrade soon to use Kontakt as primary sampler. Question is, if this will be a free update or not, if it´s not free I would wait with purchasing the currently available Kontakt2 update. The memory limitations of WinXP are ridiculous, my machines (2x Dual Core Opterons, 8GIG RAM) are currently throttled down by ancient 32-Bit software... :S

Mark my words...every plug-in developer out there will use the upgrade to a 64 bit plug-in (and possibly little else) as an excuse to roll out another major version upgrade. Along with that will come money out of your bank account.

Money out of the bank is still better than remaining in the stone age.

Modern computers and OS's are x64 compatible. So are more and more sequencers (Sonar 6, upcoming Nuendo 4) and samplers (Play, upcoming Garritan player). RAM is getting cheaper and Sample libraries are getting bigger. There's plenty of reason for Kontakt to go x64. It is about time for NI to wake up and embrace the future. It is not good business policy to stay in the past.

Kontakt 2 is one of the things holding me up from from using my x64 version of Sonar.

Same here! I uninstalled recently XP64 because there is too little software support. Sonar only offers bitbridge support which wasn't working well with kontakt.

Btw, there's been a thread on sonar forums about poor performance of vista 64 bit vs the 32 bit. Still alot to go!

Same here to. Must be in the air. Just went back to XP Home. To many VSTi problems with X64. A shame really.

If you have a bunch of RAM and want to use it mainly for samples, set the memory usage to system cache in winxp.
Then pre-load all these samples (or the start of it) into the system cache.
Then, you can have a very small DFD preload size, and your projects load really fast.

The guy from ESC made me a new feature that let's you dump all samples path from selected nki files into a text file.
I then use this file to cache part of my most used samples, which takes about 3 minutes, but then access is instant, the second time I launch the app, it takes about 2-3 seconds to read thousands of files.

There has been alot of threads on the sonar forums about memory... In 32 bit, most apps can't use more than 2 gigs!
It requires serious wizardry and hacking to enable an app to use 3 gig.

Btw, how do you "cache" some specific files?

    >>Btw, how do you "cache" some specific files?

I don't know if there is a specific function in xp to directly load a file or portion of the file in the system cache.

Anyway, just loading a file puts it in the system cache. You have certainly noticed that sometimes, the first time you run a project, you get crakles and so (using DFD), and the second time you play it, it's running smooth. The reason is that the second time the files are in ram (cached) and the access is 1000x faster.

All I do is to read a portion of the file, using the fread function (C/C++). I do that at boot, time to get some coffee,...

Note that there is nothing that can be done with protected libs or monolith files, only NI could make such a utility available.
