What's the purpose of that button? Is it being saved for future functionality upgrades?

<F1> on its own doesn't appear to do anything (yet!).

<SHIFT> + <F1> accesses the Save function without using the mouse/keyboard.

So there is a use for <F1> it would seem.

    Cheers

Press and Hold F2 and turning any knob records this automation to the pattern
