Maybe this will be useful to some. A few things...

Based off of SaintJoe's 'Maschine 2.0 recording MIDI into Ableton Live 9 workaround' a few changes. Thanks to him for putting it out there.

*Note: This was done on Live 9.1 w/Maschine Studio 2.06 software.

As far as the groups load them with whatever you want. This is just something so I could save a template and change afterwards. Maybe you'll get a message about missing sounds if you don't have same ones I used in template just change them up. One thing that's a pain is that when you change the KIT in a group it always reverts back to default color which not a big deal if you don't care about that.

    • Group A (yellow) is the only 'MidiHost' channel needed freeing up the use of the other 15 instead of using 2 groups/midi channels per allowing you to only have 8 true sound/kit slots.

    • Group B thru H (blues) just loaded with KITS. Change to whatever you want in the slots.

    • Group A2 is an example of loading an instrument onto a sound slot allowing you to play keys. I left it as midi from MASCHINE VST but just change it to ALL INS or your controller keyboard. For me I would change to MPK49.

    • Groups B2 - D2 (greens) just more slots for instruments.
*Note: That INSTRUMENTS are assigned different than KITS. The KITS have their group input/output MIDI setup as you'll notice. An instrument has to have the midi under the SOUND tab defined also since the instrument needs its own channel. Just look at the setting and should make sense.

    • Groups E2 - H2 (reds) slots for sampling from the AUDIO 2 MASCHINE track. So when you sample into Maschine you can:
      1. Slice the loop and apply the slices to the GROUP which will spread them across pads. There's that 'APPLY TO' button. Just drag/drop it to the GROUP you are WORKING WITH
      2. Duplicate the pad to another pad (next sound in group)
      3. Sample to all the sounds slots in that group
      4. etc...

    • AUDIO 2 MASCHINE track... just arm this track and change monitor to IN...
You can drop a loop on one of the clips (mp3) or record from YouTube, etc.. into Maschine while in VST mode
FYI... I have a Fast Track Pro with the headphone out to INS 1/2 so that creates the loopback. No need for a soundcard that has virtual loopback.

    • I also set a KEY mapping in LIVE... the O (overdub) is set to my laptop keyboard '/'

I use the GROUP A as channel 1 since the VST is basically taking up that channel anyway. All the subsequent tracks (external instruments) match (MIDI 2/EXT OUT 2, MIDI 3/ EXT OUT 3, etc...)

I think that's pretty much it. Just make sure to have GROUP A SELECTED and ARM the track you want in LIVE of the different group. Meaning GROUP A (yellow) will always be selected when NOT editing something in Maschine VST itself.

Hopefully this makes sense without any video.

Sorry, just saw this.... just open it up as 'live set' or double click on the .als file.

Thanks, this was a huge help! Couldn't get my head around that midi feedback loop and this solved the case splendidly!

It's not optimal when you need to remember to change between group A and other groups, but I can definitely live with this for now. Thanks!
