I think the main difference is:

    (a) 64 pads (4 x as many, may make it easier for scale/chord playing- more range etc.)
    (b) Tight intigration with Live (more direct buttons to live stuff than a Maschine)
    (c) Full analog style step sequencer (32 steps) AND drum machine at the same time.

If those things dont matter to you, then its no biggie; I think it is a big deal for the Live users who were just using clip button devices (APC, Novation) without velocity and pressure etc.

Also remember this is a V1 launch of PUSH (and it seems very well thought out based on the designers feedback on the Live Forum to questions), remember how basic Maschine was on launch? PUSH will only get better I am sure.

As far as I am concerned the more controler choise the better- I still love SPARK for its simplicity, each to their own...

No. Who said anything about "NI inventing midi controllers" besides you? You seem to be under the mistaken impression that Maschine is no different than the generic MIDI controllers that existed before it.

NI's introduction of Maschine was a paradigm-shifting game changer that took the best elements from various classic music gears of the past with its own innovations as to what it means to be a hands-on hardware-based instrument in today's music production and performance environment. Maschine has completely changed the way many people make music with its groundbreaking software/hardware integration concept.

Ableton and Akai are responding to and trying to catch up to NI. Maschine set a new standard for hardware/software interaction, and now Live and the MPC brand are having to shift. It is a response to the success NI has had with Maschine. See what is working and do it, profit + evolve. In the long term, controllers that take the mouse out of the equation more and more is inevitable.

I'm totally agree with you sowari, and since reaktor will have better OSC support i hope we will see this port to maschine in the future.
I think it is more important to let users make their own interface (with Touchosc, Lemur ...) than making new hardware with every new release (because after Push there will be Push2 and so on).
I have an old Maschine (first serigraph) and i was thinking of buying the mkII but now i fear that NI make a new one to answer to Push.
This "integrated software/hardware war" is probably great for new futures but it tends to make the equipment obsolete more quickly.

    just my 2 cents

Definitely think that NI will make a new product announcement in early 2013 - even if its just at concept stage and a release around aug/sept 2013 as a response to Push and to stop users migrating because of the marketing hype.

One has to wonder what Akai is getting out of making Push considering its functionality does cross over in to what the Ren does.

MkII was more like a minor hardware update adding RGB LEDs. I can imagine NI considering a substantial revamp of the whole Maschine concept for V2.
    ---
Ableton have always worked well with other companies, making Live work well with anyone's hardware. It's not surprising that Akai is happy to work with them. I suspect they're onto a good thing.

Youre on the money, Maschine is history, afaic. I dont even care if they add every sensible feature theyve omitted. Im out.

The real difference here, the insurmountable, is that Push has the potential to become a template for a new modern instrument. Like the Fender bass or the Hammond. Its been designed with traditional Western theory in mind, its not a "beatbox". Its really a new instrument, one to be refined but not discarded.

Add lights, throw in a synth.. just not enough. But it would never have been. Time moves on. I love my Maschine... for me to poop on! :p (no really, I do love it but Im gagging for Push and Im not even an Live user)

NI stated clearly the Maschine environment was limited to beatboxing. The disco fever that has gripped NI.. well, as idiots will say, "it is what it is"
    ---
Try to make it work, but its already been fixed. Push. Id be sick with anticipation if I was an Ableton user. Live 9 translates melody, harmony and rhythm. Push is a logicaly designed midi instrument. Its not a beatbox with knobs and a software sequencer. Ableton has taken us to the next milestone. Believe the hype.
    ---
Heres some perspective, Push and Live 9 together are the most expressive and capable electronic music environment there has ever been on earth.
    ---
    Yes, you understand.

"Very interesting.." hahahahaah. Well played TabSel, well played. . I like this guy.

    @stroft ...

I agree ... some aspects are truly innovative ... groundbreaking. They may have reinvented the keyboard too. Live is already a monster of a creative environment .... now adding a killer front end. Cool indeed.

This thread got big :p Nearly 10k views! Someone is watching haha.

It's a shame it's slowly turning into a Maschine VS thread as usual. Hopefully we can keep it constructive.

Reinveted the keyboard? You guys must be kidding....just do a search for isomorphic keyboards. The idea has been around for a couple 100 years. I have been using a similar layout on my launchpad for the past couple of years. There are a number of iPad apps which use similar layouts as well. The peeps at Ableton just put 2 and 2 together. Hardly a revolution.

Really?... I had no idea. It will be the first isomorphic keyboard I've seen then. Good on them for putting 2 and 2 together ...

Nothing has been reinvented here, anymore than anything was reinvented when Maschine was released. It's simply a controller tailored for people that use Live. That's where the appeal lies, to me at least. If I'm going to use Live it'll be more convenient to use a controller that directly controls Live itself rather than open up as a pluggin inside it.

Sadly no parameter locks with the Push Sequencer atm. But it is on their list :/
