i've been a vinyl DJ for about 16 years and have been DJing digitally for about 2. i really like using control vinyl and mixing externally but i have been experimenting, and wanting to get more experience, with mixing internally or without turntables.

my biggest concern is adjusting the pitch when the beats start to drift away from being beatmatched if i mix internally or if i use a device other than turntables and a dj mixer.

i've fooled around with beat gridding and mixing internally using just my computer but i found that the grids are often not precisely accurate and therefore there are times when the mixes sound slightly off even though TSP is "synching" the beats/grids.

i would like to find a set up that would closely resemble manually adjusting the pitch using the sliders on a Technics 1200. i would also like to be able to quickly adjust the pitch by hand like using the jog wheel on a CDJ-1000 or putting my hand on the 1200 platter to slow down or speed up a record.

i've been thinking about getting the VCI-100se but i currently have the Kontrol X1. i use the X1 with an external mixer and control vinyl.

Can i achieve the same results with a VCI-100se with a Kontrol X1 and and external mixer? again, my concern would be manually adjusting the pitch to speed up or slow down a tune like on a 1200.

for those of you who do use a VCI-100 or any similar device, how do you make fine tempo adjustments?

i've been a club DJ for my entire career but i am now starting to DJ at small bars and small events where i have to bring my own gear. i really do not want to lug 2 1200s and a mixer to these gigs if possible. i don't own CDJs.

    thanks for your help.

I've got a Numark Total Control which has jog wheels on it and you can use them much like you would with the platter on a turntable, actually better because you can also speed up a slow deck which is hard to do on a turntable (never could get the hang of that squeezing the spindle and twisting it thing).

What I haven't worked out at the moment is how to get finer adjustments when changing the BPM. At the moment, the best I can get (and that's via the keyboard, not the controller) is 0.05 but I keep reading I should be able to get it down to 0.01.

The Good thing about a descent Midi Controller is that you can almost do what ever you want with it,e.g. how the pitch fader will work. Even with Controllers with low resolution (10bit for the pitch fader) like the VCI-100 you can always work out something as I did. So what i did is mapped a Modifier to "change" the Pitch fader from "NORMAL" to "FINE" and you can always adjust how "FINE" you want it :)

This is the sort of stuff I need help with as I can't get my head around it. But don't want to hijack Rich's thread.

    I recently moved from a 2 * 1210 + Djm 800 + Kontrol X1 Setup to the VCI-100SE.
Now i use the sync function in the beginning and if the beatgrid is shifting during the mix i just deactivate sync and match/adjust the beat manually with the platters.

It's really easy to work it out if you know how MODIFIERS work.
Just use a modifier and a second more fine TEMPO adjustment with
    these settings:
    TYPE OF CONTROLLER: Fader/Knob
    INTERACTION MODE: Relative

    ROTARY SENSITIVITY:15%
    ROTARY ACCELERATION: 0%

    When the Normal Tempo is:
    TYPE OF CONTROLLER: Fader/Knob
    INTERACTION MODE: Direct

This is what works for my VCI-100

That's something I need some more help with. I've been looking at the Traktor manual but do you know of anywhere with step-by-step examples of setting up the sort of thing you're talking about?
