Absynth4 RTAS and surround

Hi,

I recently tried to load Absynth4 as RTAS Plug-in on MacOSX.4.8 PTLE 7.4cs7

I activated additionnal outputs in the menu File/options/surround and try many settings but the additionnal outputs don't show up in the plug-in input of Pro Tools LE.

I tried reloading PT and my session with no success.
I tried desactivating Absynth4 and reactivating it with no more success.

I mostly use Absynth4 VST with Vstack on a PC aside the mac and it's working ok with the same presets in surround but with my setup and surround, it's easier to handle multi-out directly in PT.

If someone has a workaround tip... or is it a bug ?

 

I'm not sure, and I'm not a PT (or Mac) user. Let me ask a couple people...

In addition :

I tried to wrap the VST version with VSTtoRTAS 2.1 :
- the VST version loads up the last preset used in the RTAS version
- the multiout show up and surround works
- but the GUI doesn't respond correctly and I can neither load any patch nor edit anything.

So this is not a workaround...

PS : MacOS.4.9 and not X.4.8 but I don't think it makes any differences.

 

I asked Brian Clevinger about this- are you sure that PT LE can use surround plugins? He thinks that unless it's changed it only handles stereo plugins...

And, I've heard back from the people at NI who use PT LE.

PT LE doesn't handle surround tracks by itself; you have to use multiple mono/stereo tracks as a kludge. Maybe you could try creating a bunch of tracks and see if you can get it to work that way.

Officially PTLE doesn't support surround BUT support multi out plugins. If Absynth4 can have 6 output you can assign individually the additionnal 4 outputs to Aux track and then assign outs of those aux track to discrete 6 outputs of a Digi002 or Digi003 or Mbox2 pro and monitor it as discrete 5.1.

ex absynth4 out1-2 -> out 1-2 (L-R)
absynth4 out3-4 -> Aux 1-2 -> out 3-4 (Ls-Rs)
absynth4 out5-6.L -> Aux 3 -> out 5 (C)
absynth4 out5-6.R -> Aux 4 -> out 6 (LFE)

You can do this with Kompakt player (1.0.8) or any Kontakt based library that offers surround samples (eg EWQLSO Platinum).

Altiverb 5 RTAS is another exemple, it can handle 5.1 outs even if the input signal can only be mono or stereo.

So technically speaking, Absynth4 could be used as a surround plug-ins VI (but not FX). The VST version has 6 outs and those outs are seen by PT (except issue listed above with GUI).

Note : PTLE 8 will soon support up to 7.1 with Complete Toolkit

When you open a multi out plug-in, those additionnals output can be choose as Plug-ins input for all audio, aux and instrument tracks.

But with Absynth4 no additionnal 'plug-in inputs' are created. I tried with both mono and stereo tracks

With wrapped Absynth4 VST I can see those 'plug-in inputs'...

Oh... hold on.

Change your outputs in standalone. Now, open PT- do they appear now?

Tried and.... no change
(NB : the plug-ins seems to remember the output settings without issues)

I also tried to reinstall in another computer (Ibook G4 + MacOSX.4.11 + PTLE 7.4cs7) :
with Absynth RTAS 4.0.2 (Komplete5) same behavior (with change in standalone and in plug-ins)
with Absynth RTAS 4.0.5.003 same behavior (with changing option in standalone and in plug-ins)
with Absynth RTAS 3.0.2 surround output are there !
