Not true. Windows uses a GS MIDI instrument, not a GM MIDI instrument.

Just tried the 2.7 release, it really does have time-stretch on the audio loops! :)

Nobody is wrong. GM is a subset of GS.

Er nope. Without an interface the data is useless and nothing will trigger. Data is just ones and zeros or whatever.

    Yes if it's MIDI USB.
But it's not OK to say "your".

Not a strictly accurate description. GS is Rolands major enhancement to the GM voice allocation system. Both GM and GS stand in their own right.
Also, as you probably know, there are many MIDI instruments and VSTs which don't conform to any voice allocation format and they can all be played via a computer.

the audio is great. would like to see the capacity to have a linear audio track that is as a group, replacing the group with a full audio editing function and represented in the scenes as a linear audio track waveform.

what i mean is the option to select a patern mode or audio mode for groups, and if you select audio, it changes to entire pattern area to an extended audio work area, adding a full linear audio track that does not require an event or be in loop mode, and a way to sum entire groups into a single audio file. a plus to this would be the ability to freeze a group in a temp audio file that frees up cpu.

GM is a subset of GS. GS is an extension of GM. These are standards. How well an instrument complies to these standards is another matter :). I have no idea how good the MIDI implementation is in Windows, and there's probably more than one implementation for all I know. Most third party sequencers I suspect use their own third party software which are more compliant (could be wrong, no idea) .

Even the referenced Wiki article does not call GM a subset of GS. They are both standalone protocols, the fact that GS extends the GM format does not make GM a subset of GS. It would be like calling Win 8 a subset of Win 10 (pedantic I know).

MIDI sequencers don't care about voice allocation formats, they just churn out MIDI messages. It is up to the receiving instrument to correctly orchestrate the received GM, GS or XG voice allocated MIDI file (the XG format is Yamaha's extension of the GM format).

People who are generally interested in accurate voice allocation include Karaoke performers, gamers (though not being a gamer myself the sound tracks for new games may now be sampled based), and gigging musicians who want accurate backing tracks.

    N.I Team,

I love the idea of incorporating Audio to Maschine. But I was wondering if there is away to delete or edit the audio loop for other patterns in the same group. I would like to be able to this when sampling 80's and 90's songs to have 4 times with the song normal pitch or tune and have the other patterns with different tune (Like - 4) or pitch instead of having to create a new group, load the audio plugin, load the sample, change the tune and having to put back all the others effects in that new group.

Thank you in advance for your help, and I apologize for the language barrier in case you guys can not understand what I am trying to do.

Lordy of course they are single protocols, it just so happens GS understands the GM protocol because GM is a subset of GS. It's exactly the same to say that GS is an extension of GM. And yes your Windows 8 vs 10 is a pretty good analogy, there's a reason there is backwards compatibility because they are both built on top of ntoskrnl. It's slightly different concept though as MIDI standards are more linear, NT kernal is like multiple layers on an onion (object orientated).

Anyway you know I said you were both right because GM was a subset of GS:

Well it turns out I was wrong to say you are both right - many apologies. It turns out you were wrong and he was right, so my bad ...

"Windows follows the General MIDI System Level 1 specification."

    Onwards then.

That statement does not alter the fact that Windows uses a GS Instrument hence the name GS Wavetable Synth.
There is a physical difference between a GS and a GM synth because the GS synth has to provide extra sound banks.

OK we are now moving to the Wavetable Synth now I've put that one to bed.

It appears to be capable of GS but plays General MIDI, as stated GM is a subset of GS:
    http://impossible-music.wikia.com/wiki/Microsoft_GS_Wavetable_Synth

    Observe the soundset: GM.DLS
    Observe the name: GM.DLS

And this link, again mentions General MIDI DLL (Windows 98 mind so WAY out of date!):
