So i just bought a maschine off eBay 2nd hand, but the seller had no idea about license transfer. I contacted NI and realised i could sort it out myself by sending them photos of the maschine and the serial number. However NI got back to me only to tell me that its the EDU version, so i contact the seller explaining the situation and that the only way to resolve this is with a refund, to which he replied with -

    "hi

sorry have just returned home. That is very annoying ! i never
knew that it was that version. Can u give me a couple of days &
see if we can find a way round it or a number that will work ?"

So now i don't know what to do, one thing i find strange is that there is no mention on the box or anywhere that it is the educational version, is it possible that NI got it wrong or is that just wish full thinking. Also am i right in thinking that there is no way you can upgrade the software from EDU to full.

Best bet is to file a dispute with Paypal; there's nothing NI can do.

I agree with thehalestorm......fact is you bought an item that did not meet the listed items description, unless of course you didn't read somewhere where this guy told you he was selling a EDU copy.

If I recall, you can upgrade a EDU license, but you can't transfer a EDU license, which is what you really need.......sowri could probably shed more light on that....

Nah it didn't state that it was a EDU version but its irrelevant as its been used and registered anyway and therefore cannot be used by someone else, whats even more frustrating is that i can run the 30 min demo and see how awesome this thing is (coming from a mpc2000xl) but cant use it properly.

    Sigh !

nope. it's no problem to reregister a used version of maschine. only the edu version cannot be transfered. so check and better triple check if you buy on ebay that it isn't the educational version.

sorry, but it has been mentioned here a trillion times...

Yeah i know you can transfer the registration on a full version of maschine, what i meant was that i assumed it was the full version as it had been used and that a used EDU version would be worthless to a new user.

I have recently spoke with NI regarding this issue as well as ebay sellers seem to be increasingly selling EDU units to people with the EDU info in very small print or outright stating that the EDU unit is completely the same as a full retail copy. (I just prevented a friend from having this same issue) NI are aware and doing their best to stop this. but in all honesty the seller may really never have known the EDU status of it (or just me a jerk) either way I would email him back letting him know the ONLY way you will be happy is with a full refund. if he doesn't comply (it's his loss if he didn't know not yours) then I would pursue larger action against him. good luck.

an EDU version has info to that fact on the box and also the install should have info about which version it is.

sorry, but whoever is trying to sell you this is not telling the truth.

you need to get him to give your money back or file a dispute with Paypal.

sowari I have seen issues where the sticker is removed. and really if you don't know what to look for you could easily be duped into thinking it's a full version. It's a shame and leaving a bad taste in peoples mouths... I honestly think we will see more and more of these threads as people sell or try to transfer licenses where people just don't understand what an edu version actually is. but I agree i would contact paypal right away ...

I think NI should change their policy in this matter. Being flexible is what makes customers pleased.

Does an EDU owners even know about these conditions when they're selling their Maschines?

well, it's 100 bucks cheaper than the real one, sell it on ebay to someone for 500, make 50 bucks and hope the poor lad will not sue you. sort of a business plan?

I hope the lesson learned here is to just save up another $100 to avoid this problem.

    I think so too.

The same thing recently happened to me. I even offered to pay to have the license upgraded. This seems like a very logical solution that would keep people happy while also protecting NI's IP. Just have the new owner pay the difference of the licenses, and maybe tag on a service fee or something.

Luckily for me, some fans donated money to me so that I could turn around and buy a new Maschine.

I love the device, but NI's strictness on this matter really turned me off.

i think it's nice in the first place to even offer the edu version for students and music schools etc. - blame the a**holes that abuse that, not NI!

If you haven't filed a PayPal dispute yet, do it NOW. When you file the dispute, PayPal will put a hold on the money in the seller's account until it's resolved.

I had the same experience, but the seller basically told me "oh well, I said no returns. too bad." He didn't respond to PayPal's attempt to resolve the issue, so they gave me my money back and told me to keep the unit. That wasn't the outcome I wanted, cuz it doesn't seem particularly fair to the seller, but I guess since he was unwilling to refund it, PayPal took it by force and he loses.

I even got NI support to send me an e-mail saying "this is an EDU license. we recommend you return the item and get your money back."

I won TWO more auctions after that for used Maschines, both of which turned out to be EDU when I said "before you ship it, please look very very closely at the UPC code and see if it says EDU." Both times the seller responded "oh whoops, I, uh, was selling this for a friend," and cancelled the auction. Yeah.

But buyers really need to do their own homework as well. There was a thread on here a while back with someone asking "hey check out this eBay auction. is this the EDU version?" And everyone said "no, it looks good." But none of the them apparently even read the auction description, because right there in the middle, in LARGE TEXT was "This is the Academic version."
