    hi chris,

you just said what i had in mind.
it is a lot harder, making a good and small
library, but this is the way everybody should go,
because it is a smart way.

when looking at those big gigabyte-samples,
i always think they must come from microsoft,
labeled ms samples or something :)

    best wishes

    In a perfect world, yes!

In a world filled with a branching of the Kontakt libraries (these require streaming and these don't) and potential lawsuits, then not yet...

I must say that pretty much ALL of the music we've ever heard and loved was made without any kind of "streaming". Is it really that important? I think it's just some gearhead ****. Sorry! Most of those huge piano patches don't even sound as good as smaller carefully programmed ones. Kontakt's initial release is so far ahead of the competition that we should be able to spend more time writing music and less time waiting for the "ultimate" features. :)

No I don't agree because this is a way to do the same job on a cheap PC than on a high end sampler or computer. I fully agree through about this piano patches. I heard the Yamaha PLG150PF card (it has 20mb in ROM) and it sounds much better than 256mb piano patches. I can really live without this streaming thing but it would have been a nice feature since I guess with all the new upcoming software your free memory will be sucked very fast !!!
Lets talk about something more serious: how many days to wait to get it ?

    How Many Minutes!

It's true, streaming would be nice, I meant more that the initial release sounds pretty good.So let's just get it out. Besides, I'm sure once we all get our hands on it we'll have some good ideas for the upgrades. If we have to wait couldn't there be some downloadable demo with disabled features?

    Re: How Many Minutes!

Pretty Good... the initial release sounds Amazing.. :) And man am I digging the fact I can play with it in its early stages and see it evolve into this magnificent piece of software beauty. And speaking of the fact this is software, man are we spoiled now a day.

    Time machine
    Tone machine
    256 voices
    built in effects
    14 filter types
    3 gigs of sound
    Modulation
    16 instances
    Simi-modular
Works Standalone and with every major host and on PC and Mac

Don’t get me wrong, I am like every other tweak head-software-hardware-synth-sampler junkie,.. I want it all:

    BETTER
    STRONGER
    FASTER
    MORE
    BIGGER

And I am sure some of you want streaming too

But lets sit back and think of everything we've got going for us so far.
Sorry if some of you don’t want to do that, but I just did that as I was reading some posts.. .and man it feels great being a musician in today’s day and age.. I mean look at these tools we’ve got.

    I mean AMAZING

    Chris,
I am with you. I didn't mean to sound so casual about the initial release. I think Kontakt is going to be the s***. Anyone not using it will be sad until they get it. Giga people might even feel a little silly. I don't take any of this stuff for granted. Even if it was never upgraded it would probably be amazing as long as you made music. I would buy stock in NI if I could. I'm just sorry that we can only chat about it for another few months. aaaaarrrrggggghhhhh :)

With all due respect to NI who is hosting this site...

...what's with all the user hype I am reading in the previous post? I mean the software isn't even out yet! How do you guys know how cool it's going to be until you mess with it first-hand and verify that it is indeed everything that it's supposed to be.

NI has been really good at making relatively solid, great sounding software...but I am still cautious. I mean people are saying stuff like "I'm selling all my hardware samplers right now and using Kontakt". I don't know about you but I like to base my decisions on more than just the pre-release literature (or a 30min. demonstration at a trade-show).

Going back to the disk-streaming issue. The previous posts have stated that we should be happy with all of the other amazing features and not worry so much about streaming.
Well...first of all that's not what this thread is about. Secondly, Gigasampler has had this ability for over 2 years. That means that disk-streaming is no longer a cutting edge technology but should be common place by now! I understand NI's legal and processor issues...but I do have to say that by not including the feature, NI has IMHO fallen second to Gigasampler, HALion and Unity Session.

    Normal Product Excitement!

With all due respect to mr. phase....

This thread is in fact called "Any news about Disk Streaming Implementation". You want to know what all the user hype is about? Well, I think you expressed it best when you said YOU were "cautious". Dude, that's just you! I think most people think new equipment/software is exciting. I'll skip the caution phase and assume that the final product is in the ballpark of what they say it is. It's not life or death, just gearhead excitement. You seem uncomfortable with the fact that this has created such a frenzy (think sports). Why are you even on this forum? I said many post's back that all of our music WAS created without the benefit of Kontakt. That doesn't mean it won't vastly improve the way some of us work. I WILL base my decisions on the literature and NI's rep. If it isn't cool I'll move on. Personaly, I don't give a f*** about Gigasampler or streaming. Kontakt looks great to me the way it is and I can use it NOW. :):):)

    Whoa Mr. Dinerdog,

Why don't you calm down! Take a deep breath, relax, you're going to give yourself a heart attack!

I guess your analogy with sport fans is right on the money given your adverse reaction to my advice of caution!

This thread is about disk streaming news, information and anything related to this feature. It is very important to myself and just about anyone else interested in accessing Gigasampler's increasingly vast resource of libraries.

If you are in any way working on orchestral scores you would probably give a F@$K!

Nonetheless, the idea of this thread is to give NI some user feedback on what type of functions we are interested in.

I would like to make it very clear to NI that until they implement some form of disk streaming (or Apple makes Mac that can access more than 1.5gigs of RAM) I can not find Kontakt any more useful than what I already have.

That's all, take it for whatever it's worth!

Now go drink some herbal tea.

    Dear Mr. Phase,

One, I'm not that excited and two, I see no reason to be cautious when it comes to art! Streaming, schmeming, NI has been thinking about this longer than we have. THEY KNOW. And to paraphrase myself:99.9% of our favorite music was made without Gigasamplers. As far as orchestras are concerned I recently used 25 members of The New York Philharmonic on a spot I wrote for Computers Associates called "Stapler". My guide tracks were 16 EXS instruments. So I know orchestral. Of course I'd like streaming in Kontakt. I think when it's feasable it'll happen. I just think this will be a great product no matter what. Cutting edge doesn't always mean good either. I still love my Roland 760's and think the XV-5080 is one of the worst things Roland ever made (sample playback-wise). I'm basically looking for creative, inspiring equipment. Soft or hard. For what it's worth. :)

ps:I hate sports and am drinking a vodka & cranberry right now!

    Dear Mr. Diner,

You are a strange dog indeed! Tell me something regarding this quote "I WILL base my decisions on the literature and NI's rep. If it isn't cool I'll move on."
Is that before or after you shelled out $500 to NI?

I am glad that you embody the true spirit of exploration, but for my money I'd rather wait until this software is actually out and I can demo it on my system. This has got nothing to do with art and music, and everything to do with common sense.

Nonetheless, I wasn't criticizing your post, merely giving out a word of caution to inexperienced readers who might interpret the hype on this board as fact.

As far as "99.9% of our favorite music was done without Gigasampler", that's true, but if you look at it that way, you could say that 99.9% of music was done without computers, without software, without samplers, without synths and so on.

I don't particularly care about Gigasampler, I don't use it and I am rather irritated by the idea of having to buy a PC to use it. What I do care about is purchasing products that allow me to do what I need to do to stay competitive and please my clients. Kontakt's promised stability and time-stretching sounds intriguing. I do hope NI figures out a way to implement some sort of streaming functionality in the near future due to the increasing number of libraries that require huge amounts of RAM.

I don't put in question that bigger isn't always better, but I am not making the rules either, just open up any EM or Keyboard magazine; and it seems that more and more orchestral (and other) libraries are being released for gigasampler only (Garritan Strings, Dan Dean, Sonic Implants Strings, Melsjo Piano, QL Telecaster, etc.) so if I can't open and play these libraries in Kontakt to their full extent, there is a problem.

Whether all of this affects you or not it's really beside the point given the fact that the majority of us don't have access to the New York Philarmonic!

    Enjoy your vodka!

    Touche'

I think we are saying the same thing, but in different ways. I'm a bit impatient, so I would spend the $$$ and put equipment through it's paces. Yes it's a little reckless, but that's me. It can be a drag sometimes (XV-5080 etc...), and many things do end up being sold for sure.

For a long time all I used was a 2080 & 760 for everything. I know them inside and out and had a much higher music to tweaker ratio. Softsynth's have been a little frustrating though. I think it's insane to have to scroll so much in the EXS24 just to hear the next sound, or not be able to change patches via midi. So far NI seems to have a better potential for usable real world instruments. I hope. I'm just a guy in search of simplification. I despise turning on 20 switches to get an idea down and refuse to get a Giga setup on top of everything else. My tone comes out of frustration, but hope that Kontakt will streamline the process.

    Cheers!

    Dinerdog,

What sequencer do you use? I know HALion is supposed to be quite easy to use, but it's VST only!

What type of work do you do?

Logic Audio since about 1.6. The EXS24 works so well w/Logic, but is cumbersome it you like to use and tweak lots of sounds. Hardware still wins if you want to load up a ton of sounds, make a new performance and save it. Roland even took this feature out of the XV-5080. Beleive it or not you could only do one full volume save of the ENTIRE contents of the unit. You could also load the same patch a dozen times and it would use a dozen times the memory in a dozen different locations. Insane. That's why I have such high hopes for Kontakt. Workwise, I do mainly commercials and more and more film. :)

You may also find that some of these Giga-exclusive libraries will start supporting other formats again. For example an AKAI version Garriton Strings is supposed to be available if not now, soon

Yes, i've been waiting for the Akai version of the Garritan strings myself for a long time. Seems like they emailed me that it would be available last September? So, that puts me in a predicament. Should i wait til Kontact finally comes out (summer?)and see if it suppports the gigasampler version. Or get the akai version, when it finally surfaces?

The new Garritan for Akai is available on the web site. They are priced at $200 but they are "lite"

Essentially what $300 will get you is 3 CD-Roms for Akai including a simlified version of the library. Some of the sounds are looped and some are have less dynamic layers (2 instead of 4).

I'd be interested in hearing demos done with the "lite" version.

    Errata

I want to specify that the library is officially $299 and not $200 as I mis-typed.

The reason why I would like to see disk streaming in Kontakt is the fact that all the superb libraries already out there need streaming. My East-West Steinway B and Siedlaczek orchestras won't fit into RAM and I don't dare to hope for an update in Kontakt format for a while. Siedlaczek's realistic sound is also based on Giga format's programming possibilities.

VST System Link is coming and I sure would like to see all my native stuff as VST instruments. I really don't like GigaStudio and being able to use GigaSamples in Kontakt would save a great amount of days.
