I really like the analogue snips and snaps that come out of the Newscool instrument in Reaktor, but of course it's interface is more for chaotic creations. I thought someone might have cracked that one open and made a more traditional drum machine instrument using the sound generation bits of Newscool.

Has anyone seen an instrument that has that sound but is laid out in a more traditional synth/drum machine style?

Thanks in advance for any info.

    Scott.

Hi scott it is very easy to do.

If you open the New School instrument you will see the Select gate modules. These are what trigger the sound engine. It might be best if you are inexperienced to just delete these and connect input to these route a sequencer to the input. Or you could route Drum16 to the proper gates in new school and you are all set.

the Gates are C2-C3 (white keys)

    I hope this helps.

Nice! Will this work for other ensembles? There's a few i'd like to add a sequencer to but i don't have instruments in the structure in the Reaktor 5 demo so i can't try it out.Thanks.

    Thanks Horuschild

Thanks Horuschild for a quick response with a simple solution.
I totally appreciate it as I am basically new to Reaktor.
I did program some on a Nord Modular, but never got too deep into it.

I wish I had more time to spend with Reaktor and be able to understand all it's modules clearly. The manual does not really cover all the modules and how they all work - it covers the new ones, and the new instruments. Perhaps I should dig out an older Reaktor manual.

I messed around for an hour or two and eventually added a selective gate module so that I could simply use Logic as my sequencer and have 8 keys set up to trigger the sounds in Newscool. Now I want to play with the Newscool interface to put knobs out there to make it more intuitive for me to program.

I think what I really want - and this may already be out there, is an analogue drum sound module with lots of knobs on top, and lots of modulation possibilities. I totally love the 'sound' of Newscool over any sample based drum instrument, I'm just not able to control it, and I've basically been using that random function to get unique results.

I want to try and change the layout of Newscool so that I can clearly and easily assign modulation knobs to my midi controller and tweak it as it plays - however this is a daunting task for a newbie like me.

But I've combed the user database and not found an analogue drum module that comes close to the sound of newscool.

    Thanks for getting me started.

    Scott.

FWIW there are many variations of newskool.
    Try µskool for instance.

    At least 8 different versions.

    Also, find preskool, tr-608, dsq-32(factory).

Then check out Allgorhythm by sonictwist.

Thanks for the tip - I'll try out those variations.
Perhaps there are things I can take from them.

Now that I've added the ability to sequence it with logic, I've been playing with the other details without much luck.

I wanted to add a numerical display that shows the rate of the effects knob in beats. It's seems to be quantized to beats now, and the half way position appears to be 4 beats, but the formulas used to set the LFO are way beyond me. I basically went in and added a numerical display in many different places to see what values the knob was changing. I'm sure I could add an equation to the values sent by the knob and have those displayed as quarter notes or something.

Another trick I tried adding was a fast LFO to the midi signal input triggered by another midi input. If you have seen the glitch machine script used in Konkrete for Kontakt, it basically is set up to add rapid-fire repeats to signal input whenever a particular key is held. So when you sequence glitchy beats, you can have a key that triggers this rapid-fire repeating. I thought it would be cool to have one of these triggers per sound, and then in Logic I could sequence this effect differently for each sound. With Konkrete it repeats all note inputs.

Here is a link to Konkrete http://www.soniccouture.com/pages/konkrete.htm

In anycase - I will have to learn a lot more to be able to add these things to newscool, but I think it's worth it.

    Scott.

I'm looking for these modules and can't find them. What are their specific names. I'm normally a pretty smart cat but I can' wrap my head around this yet. I really would like to put some order in this chaos.

Also, if your talking about the crazy one with the cellular automata drum machine thing, there is just the engine instrument but I forget what folder its in.
I like loading it up in cubase and sequencing it from the piano roll alot more. Alot better control.
Also the older versions in the user library are vastly easier to understand without the funky GUI.

I was more interested in understanding how to control newscool with˙ midi instead of guessing with that game of life thingy. If anybody can show me which modules to manipulate that would be fantastic.

this version uses MIDI Notes C2 in a C Major Scale, you know MIDI Notes 48, 50, 52, etc to play the 8 sounds. that means qwerty notes Z, X, C, etc also trigger these sounds.
