...can you load simul? Obviously, that's going to depend on the instruments - how many there are, as well as what they are - but basically what I am wondering is how many instances would I be able to load, if each multi was comprised of 48 instruments (16 per rack)? 5 instances? 10?

    Thanks in advance. :D

Thanks for the reply. Aren't the newer MAC OS's 64-bit? I am really a PC guy....

    Yeah Leopard (10.5) is 64 Bit - that's why NI is taking Kontakt3 64Bit I guess :)

Ok, so, maybe I am just not understanding here. If you have ONE instance of 32-bit Kontakt open - say standalone - and you try loading enough instruments to take your RAM usage to 2 GB, you won't be able to load more in that instance. But if you then open a 2nd instance of Kontakt, shouldn't you now be able to load another set of instruments that will take your RAM usage to 4 GB? Assuming, of course, your OS is 64 bit and you actually have that much RAM...

Correct me if I am wrong users, but I believe it is a global limit. Opening a new instance does not matter. I know user who can get more than 2gb, but not much more than 3.3gb with Laatido.

The limit counts for each application - so you would have 2GB available for your DAW plus 2GB for each standalone instance of Kontakt.

SampleConstruct is right. It is per instance. Therefore, if you have 8 gig of ram, you can have quite a few instances open and crammed with samples (but I've never safely run more than about 1.2 gig per instance).

The real limiting factor is the cpu. There are very real constraints on how many samples can be played back simultaneously. That's why I'm curious as to performance on these top of the line macs.

Ok, so it's as I thought. 32 bit OS - 2 GB limit regardless. 64 bit OS w/32 bit Kontakt - 2 GB limit per instance - total limit is the total amount of RAM. Yes, I am fully aware of the cpu issue as well. It's funny. There are so many people at the Soundsonline forum that are so psyched about Play - I must admit I eagerly await it as well - but so many people are of the mindset that, because Play is (supposedly) less of a RAM hog as opposed to Kontakt - that they will be able to load so many more samples. And I am like, wait a minute - even if that's true and you CAN load more samples because the sampler uses less RAM - does it reduce your CPU cycles as well? NOT! I think many people are in for a rude awakening when they do actually load more samples and instruments because they now have more free RAM - but as soon as the host transport goes into - ahem - play.....BANG! "WTF?"

So i was hoping that a decent amount of instances would be able to be loaded on the new MACs - not only because of the RAM, but because of the 8-core processor. Guess i am wondering how much better at steaming it actually is - alot, or a little?

    Cheers.
