Im no doubt missing something extremely obvious would be grateful if someone could enlighten me...

How do I assign a modulator to a filter ???

I have a Pro53 filter as an insert FX on my instrument and I want to modulate the cutoff parameter with an LFO.

When I try dragging an LFO from the modules section onto the cutoff knob on the filter section it shows me the circle with a line through it. Upon reading the manual, I discovered that I am unable to assign anything to controls in the "blue" sections.

How do I setup the filter so i can assign modulators to its parameters ??

    Cheers
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
I believe this is a Kontakt limitation. For some strange reason it's possible to modulate the parameters when the effect is loaded on the group level but not on the instrument level. So you could load the Pro53 on all groups (activate 'Edit All Groups') and then modulate the parameters. However, this seem to be a waste of cpu cycles.

You may wish to give your support to this feature request thread (I don't find the description very clear so maybe it's good to add some clarification of what it is you want).

    Cheers,
    Nils

    Nils,

Thanks for that info mate. I was tearing my hair out last night...

So, basically if I had 3 instruments and I wanted a seperate filter on each I would just setup three groups, assign each instrument to a group, insert a filter onto each group and then drag the modulator onto the cutoff ???

I don't really get what you're saying about the separate instruments. Say you have 3 instruments each consisting of one group. Then you can, for each instrument, just drag the modulator onto the cutoff (assuming the filter is a group level one). No need to rearrange the groups or merge them into one single instrument. Maybe I misunderstood you...
If you have one instrument consisting of multiple groups you can activate the 'Edit All Groups' button, load the effect, setup the modulation and all groups will get the same settings.

Regarding putting the filter at instrument level vs. group level, my understanding is that when you put the filter (or any effect I would guess) at the group level, you get a separate instance per voice, whereas if you put it at the instrument level, you get all playing voices going through one filter.

At least for envelope modulation, how would kontakt determine when to apply the envelope to the filter if it was at the instrument level? Only at the time the very first voice is played? Or with each note-on? At the group/voice level, each played voice has its own filter and its own envelope, so it's not an issue.

It would be interesting to know if the LFO's work the same way. Is there one for each sounding voice that is independent of all others (at least when set to "retrigger" mode)?

I know I've had some issues with the Random LFO, in that I can't seem to get truly independent streams of random values per voice, but I had assumed that was just a problem with the random LFO specifically.
