    "I dont talk a lot about the Roxy I don't want people to think that I'm Bragging, I was atacked in this fourm once for knowing Larry Levan
    and other legendary nyc dj's. I've spun at the Roxy since 1979 it' one of NYC's oldest nightclubs and every week we pack the place we Feature World Class DJ just about every weekend."

    Julio please can you humour a DJ history enthusiast and tell me a bit more about the Roxy - from what I understand it was like the Paradise Garage of skating clubs in NYC.

    Any chance of a bit more information and maybe a classic Roxy playlist as I'm really interested.

    (Anyone that think's Julio is bragging can bowl on as far as I'm concerned - this **** hardly ever gets documented and it's important as part of our heritage as DJ's)

    thanks,

    Sean

    I agree with Sean a ton--the circles DJ Roxy has moved in were *the* core of modern DJing's origins, and anyone who's read "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" would know better than to crap on this. There are amazing stories out of all that.

    Hi Guy's
    one of the reasons I don't do it is you get guys comming out of the woodwork to challenge something you said or they think your bragging, bulls---ing or your some kind of know it all. Or they want to know if you've been around so long why aren't you famous.

    I never wanted to be famous. I Don't spin to famous I spin because I love it. there is No better JOB in the world than being a dj in a room full of happy dancing people. People talk about superstar dj's like they are gods. They are not gods, just guys like you and me who play recorded music, Some are better than others but gods, only if your on drugs.

    I another thead of this fourm I called Big Record Company Excutives and Promotion people Scumbags . (in a nice way) because I've seen them distroy many DJ's with free cocaine to play their crappy records the dj's got hooked on drugs and strung out sold their records to pay for more cocaine lost their jobs, family, freinds and their live's and the record company excutives were off to use someone else. Guy's don't let that happen to you Please!

    Being a Dj is more than beatmatching it's more that the perfect mix is about making people happy making them dance they don't care about 192 kbs, wave's or mac vs. pc. alot of dj's are predictable just house, just trance, just hip hop. People talk about Larry Levan he was an amazing DJ he was Fearless He Could and Would play anything anytime Grace Jones ,Led Zep, Frank Sinatra, MFSB he was not the worlds greatest mixer but the music he played crossed all genre's.He played it all, Of course it did'nt hurt to have a custom built Richard Long sound system to play that music on but he made you want to dance.

    Anyway Guy's I do have stories to tell. And I have memories to share
    if you come to NYC Drop me a line. RoxyDJJulio@Aol.Com

    Getting attacked like that was total B.S. I have read a few such messages here and elsewhere and considered the attackers braindead and more that a little defensive. one wonders whether the attacks have more to do with jealousy than anything else. It would be such an honor to know or meet these groundbreakers, I cannot imagine what if anything goes on inside someones head to lash out when someone who has been in the scene and has so much experience to offer provides some insights into the scene.

    The fact you know these guys gives you unique insights we mere mortals will never have. The chance to learn from someone more experienced and connected to Dance musics roots should not underestimated.

    Besides which we have now met and it was a true pleasure mate! April was up at 6am the following morning wanting to know if you guys were coming back over to play ;)

    I can tell you for a fact around here getting attacked for who you know won't fly!

    @PhilL
    It was truly an Honor to Meet You and Your Beautiful Family last weekend. Juliet Loved Hanging out with the "Girls" and your wife, sounds like they had a lot in common. I also want to thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge of Tracktor3 I Learned a lot in a short time. Thank You.

    @Sean
    The Roxy opened Dec.8 1979 as a Roller Disco like no other there was nothing like it then or now. I know alot of you are saying Roller Disco?
    but a lot of Dj's came out of the NYC roller skating scene like Danny Krivit, Danny Tanaglia and others. Richard Newhouse, Steven Greenberg and Bill Graham of the Fillmore East & West fame were the original owners . Studio 54 had been open for a little while and the three owners of the Roxy were out to top it. Every thing about The Roxy was first class the skate/dance floor was second to none. the lighting system/show alone cost more than most nyc clubs. Roxy and the Paradise Gararge had Similar Layouts both were on the second floor truck parking garages. you walked a long ramp to get to the boxoffice. Where the paradise garage had a dark underground feel
    the roxy had an open bright feel.

    the Roxy was the first Mantattan Club to host Hip Hop with Dj's DST, Africa Bambattaand Africa Islam. The Roxy was the place Be. We would put up a canvas curtain across the club so people could TAG
    we used to comp members of the Rock steady Crew to entertain the crowed hip hop had been around for a while but it was'nt till it came to the Roxy that it blew up.

    got to go now but I hope this will do for now.

    Hi Sean
    I'm looking thru some old papers to see if i can find an original top 20 list on roxys letter head. I know Danny might have one If I can't find one I'll call him. we were in the same record pool at the time and had similer taste so it would reflect on what was hot at the time.

    @Roxy
    I have been approach numerous times by one of the larger clubs here in Boston about doing a very late 80's / early 90's retro night.

    I am having a hard time finding the music I want to play even though I lived it. Maybe I wasa too high at the time.

    the format is like

    Diamond Girl
    Give me tonight
    expose
    cover girls
    etc......

    right after the the cheesy 80's era LOL
