Hi everyone i posted a thread a couple months ago and still have the same problem with my audio 4 dj and recording with audacity. :|

i have a rane empath and 2 cdj 400s and can play live sound without any problems. i have everything setup right from the multicore cables to the preference setting in audacity but whenever i play sound and click record in audacity the only thing that hapens is the wav view in audacity becomes a thick line and i get nothing but a high pitched ringing sound.
i was told to use a booth plug to 3.5 stereo and connect that to the microphone in on my laptop. i was wondering if i can go directly from my auxilary out to the microphone in instead?

im in need of lots of help because for me right now the sooner i get mixes done the better.

    all ideas are welcome

    thanks,

Can you post what laptop model you have and what OS you use? With that info, it will be much easier to give you advice.

And yes, you should def go from the Empath' Auxiliary out to the line in port* of your computer using a stereo RCA to 1/8" TRS (i.e., mini-jack) cable. Using the balanced booth out of your Empath is a baaad idea.

    ----
    * in case of a laptop, it's gonna be a combined line in/mic port. it might be labeled mic but it's still a combined port where pre-amplification for the mic can be toggled via software. of course, you wouldn't want to have mic amplification enabled. in case of a desktop, you might have a dedicated line in port.

Connect the Empath to your laptop via the cable I mentioned.

Right-click on the volume icon in the system panel of the task bar. In the context menu which appears, select "Recording devices." The window which then opens lists a number of devices. One of them should be called something like "Line In/High Definition Audio Device." Select that device by clicking on it. Then set it as the default recording device via the "Set Default" button. Also make a mental note of the name of the device.

Then, fire up Audacity. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Devices and in the pull-down menu under "Recording" you would select the device you just made a note of. Recording should then work.

Welll... you're recording the timecode sound from you CD decks with Audacity if you're selecting the audio 4 as source.

Your recording source must be the rec out or booth out on yuour mixer... and as you are using an Audio 4, you have to use another audio interfacefor input. If your laptop has a Line input jack (which should be the case, at least selectable between mic or line), plug your mixer to it with an RCA to jack cable and select the line input in Audacity as recording source.

thanks the only way i could get to work was through the aux in to the mic input.

malzfreund my sound quality is tricky tho there is alot of distortion during basslines but the high freq's are pretty clear. i get some distorted noise which sounds as if the volume needs to be adjusted during basslines which impacts the high freq's at some points. i tried playing around with it while recording and cant seem to find the right solution.

is there a specific setting i could have that will make the recording sound clear?
btw thanks alot for the help

If you do this the sound quality is awful, I have tried everything trying to record out of my mixer to line in mic but even when you connect the cables the sounds of feedback etc coming are awful let alone the recording itself. You can select audio 4 as the input source then record into audacity but for some reason it records all outsie interferance as well. (apologies for the spelling!)
