forget about logic and cubase, switch to ableton live, download the demo and have fun. it runs on both platforms but is more efficient on pc.

agreed, BUT Ableton live is not a serious software for recording
acoustic instruments and mixing those recordings with vstis,
that is what old spoomy needs.

sorry not to have answer to this one.when i press the go to unread button, it swallows this one.

do you need firewire? very good question my friend.and here is my very good answer: I don't know!!

but what I know is that it is better to have the sound to be recorded on a different disk than system/aplication.depends how many tracks you are going to record/read. another thing I learn from work is that it is better to have the data stored on an external drive so that you can transport it, plug it to another system easily. for this you have two solution usb2 or firewire.try to google "usb vs firewire" I know there is a thread on the net about this for audio, and i think it said firewire is better (for protocole reason Ì think) but there maybe chris or other computer pro could tell you more

another thing I know is that more and more audio cards are firewire nowadays.

you now know why I can't answer your question, it depends on your need.

    now about my bibiche d'amour:

it is an acer travelmate 8104: proc centrino sonoma 2GhZ, 1Go ram DDRII 533MHz.screen 15,6 inches not glossy(1) plus the posibilities to plug a second screen.100Go HD at 5400 tr/min, 4 USB2 ports, 1 firewire, 1 pcmcia, dvd burner +-,I have switch off bluetooth an wifi, I consider it very silent compare to my TI667 which is already a laptop. and I'm always at max power, but you can lower the speed of proc so that the fan won't turn on and, I'm sure still be able to do recording, and as it is a laptop you can put it in another room, put a count in of ten measure run to the rec room and run back after the take;-).it is not to you that i will learn that in a real studio the machine aren't in the rec room, but I will use my laptop in the rec room at home without problem, the neigbours and outside sound will cover it with out a doubt, in fact I was surprise when i read in the forums about some people saying it was a bit noisy, man, some people are incredible! the more silent laptop seem to be ibm, but if you compare with desktop noise, it is like comparing the titanic machine room with a field in summer.I can't have a desktop at home, because fan noise make me sick, I worked with so many hard disk and fan noise that I really can't stand it at home.

and it is really powerfull. that's why I wanted it, 10x more powerfull than Ti667! my ens I did that were unusable because using 100% of cpu are now taking 10% of cpu,I post a thread about its jam jarre benchmark which was about 11%, no dead pixel also.

nowadays, few months later, the rivals are dell precision m70,(more powerfull but no firewire, and if you buy the special offer for little entreprise it was cheaper than for public and still legal), and asus W3 or Z6.

and do like me, keep the mac for internet and itunes and the pc for everything else, buy a usb key to do transfert between each,(when you download ens from UL)

unfortunatly it is not 600 pounds but 2200€, I did a search using kelkoo and misterprice,to find the cheapest internet dealer.

    (1) glossy screen seems to have a better image quality but they reflect ambient light, that's why i don't like glossy screen and the image on my bibiche is really nice.

could you develop? I'm interested, maybe by giving a concrete example?

i would say that logic is a serious multi-track audio/MIDI recorder, with very good possibilities for serious editing and mixing of audio and MIDI files.

logic also has a number of plugins, both instrument and FXs that are more geared to recording complex pieces and top quality mastering.

live, is still a tool for live music and working on stuff, i don't see it as a complex compositional tool.

    maybe i am wrong?

There's a very good sequencer in Live now, so it is quite serious

Yes, you're right, I need to record acoustic instruments, hence the computer must be quiet. I also have no other room to retire to - space is at a premium in our little flat. At present I use freezer blocks under my Mac 665 OS 9.2 laptop to stop fan noise coming on. It's very effective. I use an old version of logic (4.7). It never crashes or gives me trouble. Reaktor on the other hand crashes once an hour and the computer struggles with the processing. I see myself using Reaktor less in the future. It tends to give me a splitting headache.
