ve been experimenting with auto-wah (no, not the Canadian City) on the Scarbee Rhodes, and I realized that the term auto-wah is used to describe two completely different effects: LFO Wah and Envelope Follower Wah. The one in the Scarbee plugin is an LFO wah. (coincidentally, the one in Guitar Rig is an envelope follower).

I grew up listening to a lot of Weather Report and Joe Zawinul, who commonly played through auto-wah. But what I remember is a sound that sounds like a cross between the two: the attack was always filtered like an envelope follower, but then it would continue to wah afterwards through an LFO. Maybe I'm imagining things, but that's what it sounds like. Because when I play with the LFO auto-wah on the Rhodes plugin, the attacks are very random, because they occur at different points along the LFO. It's kind of disconcerting if you're doing lead lines. I'm not sure whether anyone here is familiar with Zawinul's equipment, but I've never heard that disconcerting random attack feel that I'm getting with the LFO auto-wah, but I'm dead sure that it's not a simple envelope follower, because it provides the vibrato-like sound.

Is there any way of creating an LFO auto-wah whose phase is restarted by an attack threshhold?

I can't think of how to do that. It might be possible via scripting, but it's not guaranteed to absolutely emulate the effect that you're after.

Scripting has no functions whatsoever that relate to anything even remotely similar to envelope follower. There's an envelope follower internal modulator, though, and you can use it to drive the Group FX filter that does the wah effect.

Would there be a way to drive a filter from two different mod sources? An envelope follower and an LFO?

Yep, but only if you have the filter in Group FX (which means you get per-voice modulation, which is not true of Mutron, which is a global effect - alas, you cannot modulate Insert or Send FX in Kontakt...)

Well, if not in Kontakt, how about Guitar Rig? GR seems a bit limited in it's editing capabilities, but I really haven't dove in very far, so I don't know how far there is to dive.
