    Flakey USB attachment

I tried to connect the drive to my PC based DAW and had the USB connector break loose. I got a T6 torx screwdriver and took the case apart. Inside was a Samsung SATA notebook drive and a SATA to USB PCB. The USB connector was barely attached with four tiny solder points. These broke loose quite easily.

After opening a ticket, I managed to get the connector reattached and have the drive connect to my PC DAW. Instead of running an install, I am taking a disk image which I will restore to another 340gb external drive I happen to have. I will install from that instead.

I appreciate that NI understands the unpleasant process of loading DVD after DVD for hours on end (East West Pianos has 35 dvds and took many days to load) and put the install on a external hard drive. I just wish they made the drive packaging a little more robust as external drives are not used once and never touched again. I tend to rebuild my PC DAW whenever it starts running out of horsepower which means a fresh install of everything I want to carry forward. This means I need to be able to depend on the install media working at least one or two more times (It was more often due to the XP to Vista to W7 migration.)

Happy holidays and try to find some time to make some noise that resembles music.

Strange here: the drive is currently installing on my PC but I could not get it to mount on my Macbook Pro, even with a powered hub. Though the install is currently in progress on the PC, it's very very slow (10 minutes to install Absynth 5...). I can only hope the data is ok... will report back...

I too received a defective drive right out of the box. I had to do a double-take the thing looked used but I cracked the seals on the box...

    same problem!

I have the same problem as MrMenace and Dns57, USB connector on the supplied Komplete 8 hard drive broke off as soon as I attempted to install. I sent a service request to NI and received a ticket, now five days have passed with no response. The fact that other folks out here have had to wait months for a replacement hard drive boggles my mind. This is an expensive product. They should be able to get replacements out to customers quickly upon notice that the drive in the box was dead on arrival.

NI - if you're out there -- please send a replacement hard drive ASAP. If its really going to be months, I'm going to have to insist on a full refund on principle, and go elsewhere for my software needs.

HD SUX, Cheap USB for a grand, NO support for CUTSERV

    Hello Folks,
American Musical Supply (thank god) Unfortunately, They have sent and refunded 2 of them due to a bad usb input that is barely soldered. I plug it in once carefully pulled it out , plug it in ... and bam.. its broke inside.

Thank god for American Musical supplies great cut serv. But there only so much they can do with a defect product. Im still waiting For NI to return my request , since the first one I returned ( 2 weeks ago)...Im so disappointed,

If I didn't have committed it to one day using it in my studio to having this I would have gotten my money back. Now I have to wait and not sure if Im going to have a working HD. I havent even had the chance to hook it up.

This was my first major purchased with Native instruments now probably my last.

The real bad part is Im supposed to review the product for my church community online, after I bragged about it and told them we" Have to have it." Maybe 3rd time will be a charm?:|
anyone else out there with same problem?

    Unbelievable bad USB port

My drive, for komplete 8 Ultimate... a damn expensive product, (well worth the money, but still expensive) had a bad drive right out of the package, and fortunately I got it to load once... second time the USB port just pushed right on in to the drive. NO foam, NO protection at all in the package. Come on NI... for real, a product that expensive, with no other way of loading other than a cheap ass made drive that breaks...

    Wait.

HOLY CRAP you guys are geniuses. A breakaway drive that breaks off the USB port after it is loaded.

Unbelievable. What a perfect pirating defense.

Good job, now just send me a link to reinstall the program, I don't need the sounds.
    ---
You have my info, a phone call would be cool... seeing as the only solution I now have is to buy another one, then tell AMEX to dispute the charges.

totally unsat. whoever designed the boxes needs to be fired STAT.

    Get on it.

    I just fixed this problem.

On a Mac, it won't recognize the drive because it is Windows_NTFS. If you have acces to a PC, plug the drive in there. Then use the Safely Remove Hardware feature to eject the drive.
Plug it back in your Mac. Voila! Worked for me.

If you don't have a PC, download NTFS-3G for Mac. This is what I did, and it told me to try it to safe-eject it on a Windows computer before using NTFS-3G to force-read the USB drive. Which could cause damage.

    Well, hope this helps!

What HD are you guys talking about? THe actual dvds themselves or the DVD reader?

I just tried to reinstall K-8, and low and behold, my HD reader, went missing right in the middle of kontakt H dvd.. I had to unplug and replug the actual drive.. not to mention I now get "FATAL ERRORS" pop ups while installing these dvds... sometimes it wont even read these dvds..

All the better reason to look at alchemy or Zebra as the go to.

K8U shipped on portable hard drive

sounds like your drive is having read errors, unless the dvd has a physical defect.
can you borrow an external dvd drive ? you can buy one for $50.
my K8U was shipped on a portable hard drive, I had to do a reinstall for a new laptop and when I opened the box (for the second time) the mini-usb jack had become un-attached to the circuit board. it took NI 6 days to send me a RMA label. the last time I had a defective piece of gear (LCD lost row of pixels) I was told they do a one week turnaround...They shipped me a new Maschine about 7 weeks later after countless phone calls, e-mails, and flat-out lying that it had already been shipped (they do not send you tracking numbers). that was some time ago, I hope things are better, but I doubt it. if only the Cust Service matched the quality of the software.

I got my Ultimate 9 today and the disk doesn't work on two notebooks :-(

Isn't there a workaround? the disk spinns up, so I could take out the disk and put it in another case?

I had to reinstall Komplete 9 ultimate and the PC wouldnt read the drive.

I took it apart and the case is very badly designed in such that theres a small gap between the back of the drive and the screw holes where the samsung drive can easily be unseated from the connector, A small push on the drive reseated it and now its working.

Bad drive design NI!!! But otherwise a fantastic product.
