Big question that I could use some help with:
I have a ton of songs composed in DigitalPerformer 4.52 using among other things Battery 2. THese songs were done on a PPC G5.
I now have a MacPro intel machine. I am using DigitalPerformer 5.1.1-----and now Battery 3. Since Battery 2 is not and won't be UB, how do I go back and work with any of my old songs. Should battery3 be opening the drum kits and laying them out as they were in Battery2. It isn't. Am I missing something here, or do I just need to move on and ditch all of the programming I had done with battery 2.
Thanks for any help you guys can provide!!!

Your basically screwed. Thats how NI rolls. It would be MUCH BETTER if NI updates replaced the older versions and were backwards compatiple! I really don't see any reason to still have an older version if you buy a new improved version. I suspect Ni rolls like this for $ reasons.

It's a problem. Similarly, going from the organ plugins B4 to B4II will also be a problem. NI should seriously think about ways to address loading old songs when they update instrument plugins with renamed versions.

Possible workaround for Battery: B3 will load B2 kits.
-So if you have access to a PPC Mac, save your B2 kits there.
-Move the kit files to the MacIntel.
-If there are unique samples you used in those B2 kits, move the sample files to the MacIntel.
-Then, for each sequence, put B3 in the drum track where B2 was, and load the appropriate B2 kit into B3.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,

The same thing happens with major (full version) updates with most plugins; not only NI...

Similar situation - I'm using Cubase SX3 with Windows and have been attempting to use Battery 3 for previous songs I created with Battery 2.

When I load a custom kit made with v2 to v3, I get audio playback for some drums but I cannot tell where certain samples are coming from. There is no blinking in some cells to indicate midi beats and some sounds are not the same as in in the v2 kit. Switching cells to get the right sample is also a problem.

Am I attempting the impossible or is there a way to make this work?

Well the only software plug-ins I own are Battery, Reaktor and Spectral Delay so I can't speak on who else does the same thing. I suspect when Reaktor 6 comes out all my songs done with R5 will be useless, unless I painfully update them myself by figuring out what ens's where loaded into what tracks etc. This really sucks for people who would like to go back to a track a few years from now and rework it.

I'm trying to edit some Battery 2 kits using the Battery 3 demo and am getting some very strange behavior. The wavs seem to load in fine, but I'm getting very strange behavior when I try to move cells around. When I try to drag one cell to another multiple cells get highlighted (actually whole rows) and those multiple cells get dragged around. I found a workaround - for some reason clicking a cell in the first empty row seemed to stop this behavior and I was able to drag and drop cells. Annoying but livable I suppose. But when I copied one cell to the next, the pitch of the copied cell got got transposed. Specifically I moved a cell mapped to f2 to a cell mapped to d1 and the pitch got transposed down.

I wondered whether first saving a newly imported battery 2 kit as a battery 3 kit might get around this editing issue. Can anyone verify whether that might be the case? As I say I'm working with the demo.

I don't get the previous discussion about incompatibility with earlier versions of the software. Most software including vstis is backward compatible no?

Oh yeah, it's backwards compatible in the regard that you can load B2 kits into B3. What's NOT backward compatible is the plugin version; that is, your host won't use B3 to play a B2 project. That's true with any plugin that uses the version number as part of the plugin name.

    Ew, that makes more sense.

Slight update. It looks like these are battery 1 kits as they have a .kit extension. Another annoying editing behavior I'm experiencing with these kits is that if I cut a cell all cells are cut, or cleared, however you want to think of it.

Another point to mention is the Battery 3 library comes with the Battery 2 and Battery 1 kits and samples. There are new Battery 3 kit files for them (.kt3 files).

Ah, that's hopeful as it suggests that saving the kits as battery 3 kits and then editing the new kits might just do the trick. Can't wait to get my hands on the full version.

Battery 3 can open Battery or Battery 2 kits, but with many limitations. The samples are loaded up, but not with any of their parameters remembered (Output assign, MIDI assign, Vol, Pan, etc).

Would it not be possible to release a version that opened up old kits exactly as they were saved in a previous version? That would encourage me to continue to purchase NI products. Mason

    Hi archeopteryx,

we are currently evaluating the status of Battery 3.

Due to the upgrade to the new sample engine some compromises concerning the import of older Battery formats had to be made.

    best,
    tom
