    Hi there

Ive just really got into using my mac and traktor (pro) for dj-ing and have been using my midi keyboard for controls etc. Its all a bit awkward and am going to invest in a cheap midi controller.

Which one shall I go for, the bcd3000 or numark omni. The main thing I want is that all the knobs and faders from traktor can be assigned to the controller, and edited if I want to. My main doubt about this is that both controllers seem to have built in effects. Say I dont want to use these effects and only use the ones in Traktor, can i assign the knobs to work with the software effects without triggering the built in ones...?

The bcd3000 looks the best as its cheaper and has more knobs and faders but any advice from experience or knowledge of these will be great

    Cheers :)

I have never actually used a BCD3000 however Ive looked at it at a local shop and twisted and dragged the faders & knobs. But a stealth/omni I have used!

The omni is my absolute favourite "small/cheap" midicontroller with built in soundcard in the pricerange, it got a great feel and layout. I have a few friends who has this units (stealth/omni) and they are all happy with their units too.

Another controller to look at in this pricerange which is consider very good is the Hercules RMX who I know is also very popular but I havent used that unit myself.

Oh, and i forgot, there is no built in effects in these units, its just premapped in the software they come with (traktor LE etc) so you are free to assign it any way you choose.

ahh that is interesting, behringer is normally quite flimsy but the fact that its got more knobs to assign to the software seems to putting it in first place for me. Just one more thing is the latency spot on with these midi controllers as thats the only thing that concerns me now

    cheers again

I dont know about the latency of the BCD at all since I havent used it, all I know is that diffrent midi controllers can have a variation in how responsive they are generally. I guess this is more about the software that maps the signals between the controller/traktor than the units themselfs. I have a small midi controller from Novation "Nocturn" and compared to my pioneer CDJ 400's it certainly is a diffrence. With my friends xone 4d I dont experience any latency issues at all aswell, so I guess its really diffrent between diffrent product. Not very helpfull I guess...

    Hello Ethan26,

The latency you hear in computer DJ controllers is generally not related to the MIDI controller, what you hear is the latency of your sound card - MIDI commands are very small data, so the lead time to transfer these small data is normally much shorter than the lead time to process audio files (much larger files).

One can optimize the latency of the sound card in reducing the ASIO buffer size for this reason.

interesting, Ill let you know how I get on. Im using a korg mikrokontrol keyboard at the mo which is quite decent, the thing is lol, theres knowhere to plug headphones into it so cant cue which is kinda rubbish especially if you want to mix lol

At the mo just understanding the effects, midi mapping etc. One thing I did notice is that I cant use effect 2 without turning effect 1 on... is that normal...?

    Ethan,

You need 2 stereo outputs on your computer (either a 4-channel card or 2 stereo sound cards) to preview on a stereo output while playing on a main stereo output.

It doesn't seem normal that you can used effect 2 only once you have turn effect 1 on, maybe the mistake lays in the definition of effect 2 which depends on effect 1 (for example if effect 2 has not a direct definition but effect 1+N) so that, as long as effect 1 is not loaded, effect 2 cannot be defined.

ok will do some investigating tommorow regarding the effecta.

As for the sound card I was gonna run the sound out of my macbook headphone socker straight into the behringer bcd3000 and cue in there. To be honest I really gotta have a proper sit down with it, as I say still learning but will keep you posted.

    Thanks for the help guys
