    Hey Guys!

What is the best DJ controller for beginners on a tight budget? I have been searching for an affordable DJ controller that can help my friend get started without needing to invest much.

When I search on the internet, there are lots of affordable options, and it seems that Pioneer or Denon might be the way to go. Ideally, would like him to have a controller that is interactive and gives tips to help learn some basic techniques and such. That, and the ability to stream music so that he won't need to download music.

This is why I like the DDJ 200 reviewed here:

Does anybody know anything about this controller? I see that it contains an app that you can connect to on your phone to learn how to do some basic techniques. It also connects to Spotify so that you can play whatever music is there.

I guess I just need some assurance that this is a good controller and that he won’t waste time and money by getting into DJing with this controller. Once he gets better, he will get a nicer controller. Is there another controller that I should check out that is more affordable than this one?

    Thanks in advance!

I don't know of any controller that gives you tips for practice. They don't work like that, however the DJ application the controller is connected to might as seems to be the case with the DDJ-200. If he's learning then it's a case of YouTube videos, an online course (costs money) or just plain old fashioned practise, which the only way anyone learns anything.
With regard to music, I'll be honest and say that having a proper collection that you can put onto a USB stick or cart about on an external HDD is way better than streaming will ever be. WiFi connextions can fail, also DJ software can be glitchy with WiFi switched on. As a learning tool it's fine, but a DJ needs to know their collection and if your favourites tracks are suddenly removed from the streaming site you're also snookered. I'll never trust streaming over a storage device.
Other than that, I can't give you any assurances but the DDJ-200 looks ok, it's very obviously aimed at beginners and that's all good. As with anything in life, you get what you pay for. Factoring things like speakers and a desk to put all your gear on is also a consideration.

Getting a cheap controller allows you to start mixing but if your serious about DJing your going to outgrow it pretty quick and there is also the other side, the more you spend the more your going to wanna get your money's worth using it and not just put it to one side after a couple of weeks which is what happens alot! I think I saved for about 5-6 months till I bought any equipment and in that time saving was spent watching tutorials on how to mix and reading DJing for dummies book lol
