was thinking about getting some to fool around with. as a beginner to playing 'real drums' i just wondered what people might recommend.

i wont need a sound source because i will be using battery.

I've been looking into that myself and reckon that the Roland TD6-KW at around 1k is very good. The TD3 is a few hundred less for a very similar kit with a just functional sound module (maybe more interesting to you if you just want to use Battery with it..?). I played both kits downstairs at Sound Control, Oxford Street if you're in London (must be similar shops elsewhere..). There's a kit by a company called Trapps which looks great for about £500 but not played it myself. My instinct says that the Roland kits are built to last. Good luck!

Budget: Ebay USED Roland or Yamaha or drumKAT stuff. Look at condition -- I understand some of the swinging Roland CY cymbal pads aren't as long term durable as PD-7 or PD-9 pads, especially used. If you mix / match pieces, make sure the technologies are compatible, even from same manufacturer.

I use 2 Roland SPD-11 + 5 dual zone pads with Hihat and bass drum pedals. 28 triggers and it's still never enough.

    Going into this, be aware:

Pad or BD pedal to Battery cell --> easy.
Making a realistic hihat properly work --> hard with any third party sound source.

I have other threads on HIHAT issues and where I've admitted using a keyboard controller more often. But a drum kit will get you thinking like a drummer would create drum parts and may be helpful on inputing parts, especially realistic fills.

    I bought a Yamaha DD-55 about 2 years ago.

Cheap solution for Midi input but:

    1) the kick triggers sometimes even when the controller
is not connected and a pad is hit

    2) I got tired of the whole drum mapping thing.
If you want to play a Battery kit or something in Cubase you
have to match the pats to Cubase and Cubase to Battery.
    No instant fun thing.

Look at an easy solution for pad to cell definition and velocity.
My pads are most sensitive in the middle and if you're to far outside nothing is triggered.

I don't use it that much for the above reasons.
But well, it was cheap ;-)

    So long,
    Burny
