Hey everyone. Curious what you all think the best Reaktor ensemble/instrument was for this year. Standalone ensembles count too, and so do things on the library additions page.

My vote is going to Metaphysical Function. This is what albums of the future should be like... perhaps a bit more sonically interesting, but this is on the right track. The downside of an album format like this is that we'll all have to learn to be video manipulators too. ;-)

    Double Ouzo.

Or maybe Mr Melody sequencer. Boring but essential to me.

I vote Instrument 1 and Double Ouzo

Well, it had to be the very arty Instrument 1: a sound purists creation if ever there was one. The most astonishing use of randomisation I think I've ever heard ( and lets credit Rick Scott for getting that culture going in the first place) .Congratulations, JN. Such a mature creation for one so young.

Very close second goes to Double Ouzo by Didier Leboz - or is it Deiter? In my opinion, the original Ouzo was the greatest ensemble in Reaktor history - so it only gets second because Double is a stripped down version of the original!

Many others come to mind- lots of Rachmiel, Brinkmann too.

Yes, Rachmiel and Brinkmann are both fantastic. Zobel has great stuff too. Lots of talented people.

I introduced my brother to computer music with Chris List's CL-909 (or something like that). He plays bass, and had an absolutely great time making drum beats. He was grinning from ear to ear. It really was a heartwarming moment.

Well . . . if I absolutely had to pick my favorite it would have to be JN's "Instrument 1," (spoombug is right) with JWH's "3x" a close second. This is why I think there should be categories for selecting these things. These two ensembles couldn't be more different - but they're both tremendous IMHO. You know - best synth, best sampler, best whatever.

Speaking of being so...american - did I ever mention my house sits less than a mile from Columbine High School? Where I graduated as well. I mean, a nation with the highest global murder rate - I'm pretty sure more americans have died at the hands of other americans (in america) than have died in combat in Iraq over the same period of time. Kinda' makes me wonder why these terrorists' would want to piss us off at all. I don't know what this has to do with my favorite ensembles either . . . it was JN's gunfire that set me off . . .

egads - I promise I'll never post after 3am again.

Absolutely Storlon, thanks to all for the tools and inspiration (and I would also like to include Kevin Hopper's work.)

I daily enjoy the efforts of all these builders (and some not mentioned) but did have an especially "transcendent" session/experience with John's "Black Dirt". Two forty minute live performances were recorded and continue to inspire and define for me what the laptop revolution is all about.

    Happy New Year to all

    Hard Question!

One of my all time favourites is El Destrukto by CList. I absolutely adore the beat sequenced granular mayhem this powerful loop mangler is capable of!

BTW Instrument1 is another favourite ;)

If you could make an instrument1 which is (tempo aware)??? i would gladly call for a toast in your honour!

    @!%$ it !!!

You deserve a toast anyway! As do all the other builders for creating such fabulous instruments.

Thanks and Happy New Year !!

Auralis (a modified version) has become a very important
part of my improv gigs, and is one of my all time favourites.

.ens and ideas by Martin Brinkmann Ernest Meyer, CList. Dieder Leboz, James Walker-Hall, John Nowak, program child and Kevin Hopper are also getting the creative juices going.

a special mention to David Coffin for his fantastic tutorial. this has also been really valuable in terms of ideas for my .ens. and modifications (such as Auralis).

    have a great new year

I have to agree with John on this one, I was mighty impressed with MF. . . . but I'm surprised to hear that Mr. Nowark would have to "learn" to be a video manipulator, I find the video side of things to be far more natural and straightforward than the audio side - maybe that's just me.

BTW - do any of you C++ gurus out there know how these talented German guys go about developing someithing like MF "based" on Reaktor technology. Is this thing just a reaktor ensemble embedded into a stripped down version of Reaktor, or is it more complicated than that? Since I'm not much of a programmer (yet), I'm curious as to what software combo someone would use to turn the MF ensemble file into a self-contained mini version of reaktor.

Probably the easiest way to do it would be to hack down Reaktor's interface, and just have it autoload the ensemble on launch. I have no idea how they chose to do it though. They probably took a less hackish and more efficient approach. They probably used the same tools to do this as they did while making Reaktor.

As for the video side of things, its just as rough as the audio. Luckily much of the same DSP stuff applies. Yes simple XY stuff in Reaktor is easy, but I was referring to the kind of stuff I'd like to do, that being fantastic generative visual fun. I really should make better use of Jitter, but I'm so busy with life in general now that I have no time for it.

hehe, i don't think it's that simple; that would be the same as changing it to a .ens file so it opens with reaktor ;)
