I think that the Chris Hein Guitars collection is great! Check it out!

Now. . . there are some non-Kontakt powered guitar (acoustic and electric) libraries also worth checking out. But the Chris Hein Guitars collection, which is powered by Kontakt, is great. One will need to put in a little time and effort to make this collection really "sing"! But Chris Hein put in lots of guitar articulations and different guitar-like chord playing choices into this library.

I haven't bought it yet, but I'm very very impressed by the Pettinhouse demos, and a good price too...

The electric guitars from Lyrical Distortion are really good and have some nice tones. I have been using them for some time now. They are very flexible and realistic. Their direct recorded guitars through amps simulators can have killer sounds!

There is a lot of good material in the Pettinhouse library and the price is hard to beat. (I use it with GTR Solo, though, as I find the Kontakt FX aren't really powerful enough for a raunchy, distorted sound.) Andrea over at Pettinhouse is a great guy and a pleasure to deal with.

I will admit that the Prominy demos sound awesome. Perhaps when my budget allows...

    Hi,

I wonder how one can make these three work together..

The plan is to play Pettinsound's "Humbucker Guitar" (free version) on the keyboard, but somehow I don't manage and I just don't get any sounds. I use Cubase, Guitar Rig 3 and Kontakt 2.
Could one of you explain how I must set up the programs/connect them?

    Thank you and regards! ;)

I don't know cubase. But just the same. 1. load kontakt as midi vst instrument. 2. select Humbucker Guitar with in kontakt. 3. load guitar rig 3 as a fx on the same buss or line with in cubase.

How I do it is by using kore 2 as the sequencer. I start with a new instrument. Then add kontakt 2 or 3 loaded with Pettinhouse in Kontakt. Last I drag and drop guitar rig three into kore 2. If I hit edit for the guitar rig I can change the amp/ effects setting to change it to any sounds/ styles I want. If you want to see what keys need to be hit then pull up kontakt it will show the lay out of the key board.

    Thanks for your advice..

Unfortunately, it's not really working yet. The main problem seems to be that you need a Midi track which uses Kontakt as a VST instrument. But in Cubase "Guitar Rig" is a VST effect, which can be used for audio tracks but not for midi tracks.

I created both a midi track with Kontakt and an audio track with Guitar Rig as an insert effect, but I didn't manage to get these two tracks communicate with each other.
So far the only way is to connect the sound card's output with its input, using an audio cable. This way the audio track receives the midi track's signals... not as midi but as normal audio signals, but it works though.

But this is just a possibility and not really a solution, since you can't play other tracks at the same time because the sound card's output is "blocked".

So, what I'm looking for is a better way to make the audio track understand that it's supposed to process the midi track's signals. Maybe Cubase is not the best choice for this kind of thing, since it seems to be no problem in kore 2. But I'm used to Cubase, so it'd be great, if it worked with it, too.
Are there any alternatives to Guitar Rig, by the way? Maybe it works better with a different amplifier, even if I really like GR.

The Pettinhouse stuff works great if you use NI's amp overdrives and cab modeling as insert effects in K3 also there are some great free vst amp sims available if you're on a PC- Voxengo Boogex is amazing. Also IMHO the electric guitar that comes in the k3 library is VERY usable

Larth, I don't know Cubase either but this should be simple enough. Whenever you use a VST instrument, your midi is recorded on a track, but the output of the VST module needs to come out somewhere as well - I thiiiink on Cubase there should be a VST instrument track visible in the mixer window. So load up Kontakt and Pettinhouse, play, and what audio meters are moving? Wherever the output is, just bung GR3 there as an insert effect.

Wish I could be more specific, but I'm a Sonar boy!

    Hooray! I managed it!

I was working on the wrong channel in Cubase. Pettinhouse in Kontakt uses a channel called "Kt. st. 1" (or so) as output, and when I used "Guitar Rig" as a channel insert on that one in the Cubase mixer, everything worked. It's just awesome..

Well, I guess this really wasn't that difficult *blush* but you live and learn. Thanks for your replies, they got me on the right track!

    Cheers and have fun! :)

Check out the CoreGuitar Strawberry electric guitar sample library for Kontakt 2 and 3.

CoreGuitar Strawberry is a high-quality, extensively sampled humbucker guitar suitable for many types of music. Since it was sampled directly from the output of the guitar, you can add your own guitar effects VST for more tonal flexibility. CoreGuitar Strawberry is suitable for lots of types of music, from rock and metal to funk and jazz.

It has numerous articulations, from various degrees of palm muting to strikes and squeals. It has 2x round robin for each upstroke and downstroke, and each string is sampled individually, the engine automatically calculating which string and fret to use for what you're playing. It also has intelligent legato articulations, the ability to slide between notes at any speed, and support for alternate tunings (you can select presets or create your own). The alternate tunings dynamically change the sound of the guitar.

The playability of the guitar is all customizable. You can switch through three pickup settings, four picking styles, fine-tune the vibrato (which uses both modeling and sampling to create realistic vibrato), and remap which MIDI controllers to your own preferences.

You can create your own keyswitches to switch between different configurations of CoreGuitar, too!

I've only just received the full version of Kontakt 3 (been on order for 6 weeks and have been surviving on the demo!) The Elektrik Guitar VI seems impressive but impossibly complex. I've been stabbing keyswitches all over the place to little effect, but somehow did manage to activate a trem that I then couldn't turn off. I did a search here and found some people asking for a manual, but no replies. Does anyone know where there is one? Or have some general tips? I get the concept now (chords with left hand, strokes with right), I've found the basic mode switch between lead / chords etc, but I can't make the articulations work at all...

My favorite electric guitar libraries are Orange Tree Sample's Strawberry (http://www.orangetreesamples.com) and Pettinhouse's Direct Guitar (http://www.pettinhouse.com). Both developers really stress making their libraries easy to play, which is huge for me, because I prefer to play as opposed to programming. I have strongly considered Prominy LP, which sounds incredible (I love Les Paul guitars), but is not very easy to play, so I ruled it out. I'd say my next two favorite libraries would be Pettinhouse's Humbucker and Warm Jazz libraries. I also own RealStrat and RealGuitar, which are nice.

For the record, I'm a pretty passionate customer of Pettinhouse and Orange Tree Samples, even to the point of providing both developers with marketing tips over time (I'm a marketing professional; you can track my posts looking for great guitar sample libraries back to 2002 on KVR when I was using VSampler, VirtualGuitarist, SampleTank, etc.; I have the same screen name as here). Even though they are competitors, both Andrea/Pettinhouse and Greg/Orange Tree Samples are class acts who make great products. I'd say listen to the demos first to get a good idea which guitar has the sound you are looking for.
