Turn limiter off (this turns headroom off, too), set your master level in Traktor to -10dB and adjust your mixer´s gain/trim of the incoming signals to around 0dB. This prevents clipping and you can use the mixer´s master level to adjust the volume.

That makes sense and sounds like a logical way to go about it.
Here is a good read from Djtt also....

Disabling the Limiter will not disable the headroom function.

Are you using TRAKTOR in internal or external mixer mode? In external mode the headroom level is set to -3db and can't be changed.

Leave the Master Knob at 0db then and set headroom level to -6db or -9db. Alternatively you can turn down the Master to -10db and disable the headroom feature. This will make no difference.

Also tell the sound guy to rewire or pull out the 19" rack hardware limiter of the PA chain ;)

I understand gain staging and headroom but in the context of Traktor, what is the software headroom doing? Cutting -9dB (or whatever you set as headroom) off the main output before sending it out to the PA? Or is it cutting 9dB off each deck's output before merging these at the master? Mixing 2 decks using 2 autogained tracks at full volume pushes the MAIN output meter into the red, peaking halfway between green and maxed but my soundcard mixer is showing the output from the software still peaking below 0dB.
What I want to know is, is there possible distoriion being created in the software, as the main meters being in the red suggests, and this distorted signal is then dropped by 9dB to keep your main mixer happy?
Whatever the answer, if the master out signal isn't going over 0dB then why would the main meters be showing signal going into the red?

edit: I'll leave this here in case anyone else is wonderingbut after some RTFM-ing I found that above the green is a 'safe' orange zone which then goes into red to indicate distortion. After trying a few pairs of auto-gained tracks at full track volume I found that at -6dB and main volume at zero I was getting the occasional red peak so now have -9dB headroom and -1.0dB on the main and all good on my software mixer.

I know some people who do (audio) setup at events and I can assure you they will all be “hell no” to this because nowadays a lot of DJs seem to think that the red LEDs on a mixer’s channel strip are the “recommended” volume.

A friend of mine configures the limiter in a way that not only limits the volume but actually turns it down (brickwall-style) the more the DJ pulls it up. If the DJ should then for about 20 seconds be reasonable with the volume he will get back to a) non-distorted and b) actually LOUD sound. So far it works for him. :)

i do recommend use limiter on -3 headroom so your output signal from traktor dj wont clip. u still have your gain on controller and if need extra punch just turn mixers gain up abit the rest u controll from your controller.
the sound is still high enough to punch the biggest worlds clubs with 20k people
see that on controller dont exceed +6 db on master out or your signal will clip.

for homemixing/streaming i use limiter on -6 in clubs on -3
