Hi, I have been trying traktor demo and would really like to be able to listen to one deck through headphones somehow before mixing - do i need an external audio interface to do this? e.g. audio 2?

I have a crap cheap audio interface: http://www.musicmatter.co.uk/numark-stereoio but only has one output - i generally just use mac I/O - and works perfectly apart from no preview listen in headphones obviously.

Thing is, I've got 2x1210 decks and mixer and want eventually to use timecode but at moment it would be nice to just buy x1 controller (that comes with tractor pro) - to allow me to mix mp3s, however is this not possible until i get audio interface e.g. tractor audio 2?

cheers - I'm just looking for cheapest option.

    Thanks for any help

Cheapest option is splitting the 3.5mm stereo jack into L + R channels, and getting the output settings right. I've never used the internal mixing mode w/ Traktor, but I was using the splitter method successfully by running the 2 lines into an external mixer. I used to use it w/ another program and internal mixer, by running 1 line to your speakers, and 1 lines to a set of headphones. I'm guessing Traktor would be able to be used the same way, w/ the internal mixer..

This is a pic of the little device I bought years ago at Radio Shack, definitely less than $10 for everything. You gotta make sure it's not just a 3.5mm multiplier tho, and actually splitting the channels separately. And then the 2 pieces plugged in are turning that mono L or R signal back into a 2 channel (albeit mono) L + R signal. This thing never gave up on me, until I finally bought an Audio 2 box a month ago.

Create an aggregate soundcard device on OSX, you'll then be able to use you Numark for main out and Mac headphone for headphone monitoring. There are tutorials on Youtube for setting up aggregate soundcards.

It's a bit of a kludge but it should work

Cheers for the help fellas - I've managed to create an aggregate sound card so main tractor output is through iMac but monitor is sent to numark interface (and then to headphones) - this works perfectly.

I assume I could equally just send iMac out to left channel of my mixer and numark to right channel - then can just mix with vinyl and mp3 using external mixer - nice one.

    Thanks loads lethal_pizzle.

Would there be any benefit then getting the Audio 2 interface? I might as well save up for the audio 6 so can use vinyl eventually.

    Cheers

If your talking about using timecode then buying an A6 won't help you. You need the scratch version of the software. When you buy a scratch version the soundcard is included.
