Can the Maschine hardware react to incoming MIDI Notes when in MIDI Mode?

    I'm trying to create a simple visual metronome with Maschine in MIDI Mode.

    I am sending MIDI notes to the Maschine MK3 hardware via a track in Ableton Live. My goal was to have the bottom 4 pads light up sequentially in time.
    However, Maschine doesn't react to any MIDI I sent from Ableton.

    When I make assignments to Maschine via Ableton's Mapping Browser, I am able to get visual feedback on the pads and everything seems to work perfectly, so I thought sending MIDI notes from a track would work equally well.

    Is there something I am missing to get the Maschine hardware to react to incoming MIDI notes or is it not possible?
