    Hello,

I own FM8 as well as FM7. As FM8 doesn't seem to come with the original DX7 factory presets, I tried to import the DX7 presets that came with FM7. For a number of sounds this works, but of all things the E.Piano sounds are not getting imported.

Contacted NI support about it, but haven't got an answer so far.

    Anybody else with this problem?

They won't import because of the period in the name. FM8 follows Windows file naming conventions...

Ah, I could have thought of that. Thanks!

So, is there a way to import them? Or do I have to wait for an update?

Maybe one can rename them in FM7? Gotta try that.

In the rest of the known universe, it's 2007.
At NI headquarters, it must be the late 1980's.

For God's sake! Using Windows file naming conventions is so last century....

At least, if they insist on doing this, then FM8 should pop up an alert which warns you that x number of sounds cannot be imported owing to outdated naming conventions and would you like to rename them in the dialog window below.

Well, we just got an update for FM8 (v1.03) so it'll be at least 2-3 years before the next one, if ever.

What gives you the feeling I'm a little unhappy with NI....?

PS - Of course you can edit the names in FM7 first. That means going through all your banks, checking for restricted characters (there are lots), re-saving them and then importing in FM8.

But, they aren't outdated. For example, I was having a strange issue with an Absynth patch a while ago, so I sent it to Brian Clevinger to take a look at. He sent it back to me in a .zip. The .zip zipped up was the proper size (it was a .ksd), but unzipped, it was a 0 byte file. Why? Because he sent it back renamed with fixed? at the end. Windows choked on the question mark...

If you want true cross-platform compatibility, you still have to follow Windows file conventions.

    Just for the record...

This naming restriction does NOT seem to apply on Mac.
I imported the DX1A bank which has lots of presets with odd characters and they all seem to have imported, including the E.Piano etc

Clearly this is a Windows problem.

    Regards - Colin
