Can't record automation in Pro Tools 12

I recently bought a S61 with Komplete 10 Ultimate to use with PT12. I'm running into a problem though; I can't seem to record automation from the S61. I can record MIDI notes, velocity, pitch/mod and sustain just fine, but if I spin any knobs it doesn't record.

I've tried setting up host automation as described here: https://www.native-instruments.com/...tomation-in-pro-tools-11.228724/#post-1324276 . This lets me manually draw controllers but I still can't record controller automation with the S61 knobs. I've tried with MIDI merge on and off. I've also tried opening a ticket with NI support, but they determined this counted as "tutorial support" and wouldn't help me. I've searched these forums as well as general online searches to no avail, other than the earlier link and a few others that only had "Me too!" replies.

Also worth mentioning, I was able to get this working in Ableton easily, but it's crucial that I'm able to make this work in PT as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

it would help me if you named a particular Komplete 10 patch that you are trying this with.

i just tried this with U-He's Diva - which is not part of Komplete 10 but is nks ready and it worked. the only thing is that knob 1 - Cut off - was Automation number 249 in Pro Tools!

and to clarify, Automation is not MIDI so it is not seen as MIDI Data.

Thanks for the reply. All my Komplete files should be up to date, but I'm realizing that my pro tools is pretty out of date (running 12.0, looks like they're up to 12.4). Let me update and see if that helps.

    Sowari,
That is a missing piece of the puzzle I have been wondering. Can you explain how you figured out this was automation #249?

Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same problem, and I am up to date on Pro Tools, 12.4, My problem is when using Drum Lab, if I hit a key on the S49 it records, but if I try to record a preset " Groove" nothing, grooves will not record, is this considered an automation? and if the same answer above applies ( automation is not midi data ) then how can I record this way?

    Hey there,

I've recently got a komplete kontrol s49 and am running it with the latest version of pro tools. The s49 is also updated to the latest firmware. As far as I understand the s49 still doesn't default integrate to Pro Tools like it does with Ableton and Logic etc. Is there still no way of mapping the hardware controls of the s49 with the automation on pro tools?

There has posting on forums for the last two years about this problem but still no answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Guys,
Yeah, i would really love some clarification on certain issues surrounding automation in pro tools also.

On a super fast PC, using PT 12.7 here with Ultimate 11, and yesterday I couldn't even get the assigned auto's in KK to record movements.
Seems to work sometimes and not every other day. o_O
And yes, I'd activated the parameter in the AAX plugin automation section ready for control recording.

It's seems a mess, and is making me extremely unproductive lately.

(*edit* Sorry just realised I probably should have started a new post for this. Mods, feel free to delete or move if it's not on point here)

In Pro Tools, the knobs don't transmit or receive data as MIDI CCs - unless they're mapped to standard MIDI CCs. So, they won't "record" when recording a MIDI track.

The knobs control certain parameters of each instrument - you should consider each instrument as it's own plug-in. Those instrument parameters are set to be controlled through Pro Tools as automation data determined by each developer.

So first you need to enable each automation parameter that you want to control in each instance of KK. This is the little box-in-box icon at the top of the plug-in window to the left of the Bypass button. I think that in KK, the instrument-specific automation numbers generally start after 100. You need to ADD them from the left column to the right column so that they can actually be used by the automation system. (I think this system was put in place to keep from having a ton of unused automation lanes written to every track that you had to search through - This way you just enable the ones you need)

Next, you can put the Automation mode for your track into one of the write modes (I prefer Touch), and when you play or record, and turn the knobs, the automation data for the parameter that the knob is assigned to should be written to the track. (You can view and edit it when you click in the view selector in the Edit Window)

It's not an ideal system, but it works once you understand it.

Check this screenshot. I'm using NI Massive in KK. I circled all of the relevant parts. 1st - In the KK plugin, figure out what parameter you want to control. You can do all, but in this case I just chose Macro 8 - Motion, which is controlled by the last knob on my KK keyboard. 2nd - Click to the Plug-In Automation icon at the top of the Plug-In UI. Find the parameter that you want to control (In this case, it's 108- Motion. There is a list. You'll see), and ADD it to the right-hand list via thew Add button. 3rd - Place the track in Record AND to Record Automation (Write or Latch). As a Bonus, view the lane of the parameter you're automating. Runs a record pass (make sure the automation is set to write as well, again) Boom. You're doing it. 51346394_10161321628605305_719080089169428480_o.jpg
