Hey, I got an Z2 for christmas but all my music is stored on my iPad which I used before with Traktor DJ. I understand that I can not use the Z2 and Traktor DJ but is there at least a possibility to connect TSP to my iPad in order to read the music (almost use the iPad like external hard disk)? This would allow that the music is only stored in one place.

    Thanks

I'm afraid what you wish to do is restricted by Apple.
TSP cannot read the iPad like an external drive. You cannot use the iPad as an external drive without doing things to the iPad that are not within the licence usage (as far as I know).

Was all your music bought and stored on the iPad? If you use iTunes on your Mac/PC you should be able to re-download your purchases.

You can use the Z2 as a simple soundcard for Traktor DJ but it will not charge the iPad and you will need to use the Camera Connection Kit.

There are apps available that make a folder in the ipad accessible as an external drive.
I'm not sure how well they work or if music files are restricted.

Thanks Karlos, all my music is stored on my iMac at home. I copied music to my iPad in order to use it with my Z1 and traitor dj.

Now I own a Z2 and in order to use the full functionality of the Z2 beyond being a simple soundcard I need to use TSP on my (work) MacBook Air. Since it is my work computer I don't want to copy all the music over.

Not sure if there is a way to access either my iPad as an external hard drive on my MacBook Air or my iMac with all the music.

I am a home DJ so no need to be mobile.

    Any ideas?

    Thx

I think in your head you need to get away from the thinking "my music is in place X and I want to move it to place Y" .. Rather consider having your music managed in the cloud and seeing your iMac/MacBook/iPad as clients, with selective tracks being available offline.
I honestly don't think that using your iPad as a mass-storage is the solution here. Music in the Apple universe is managed in iTunes, and there are a lot of benefits in having it this way.

I can highly recommend iTunes Match. It is a somewhat under-appreciated service (25$/year) that lets you copy all your music to the cloud and make songs/playlists available only to those machines that need these specific tracks.

    Here's how I do it:
My iTunes collection has >10.000 tracks, from ripped Christmas CDs over iTunes-purchased country tracks to beatport-purchased "DJ-tracks". All of this music is synced to the cloud. I manage my music and playlists on the main computer.

On my iPhone, I mostly stream my music (e.g. that Christmas music this time of year). Before I go abroad (or go to a location with no/expensive roaming), I selectively make certain playlists (those I want to have available during the vacation) available offline on this iPhone.
I own a MacBook Air 11" with 128GB SSD. This is not big enough to store all the 10k+ tracks. And honestly, I do not need "Wham - Last Christmas" on this machine. Thus, I only make specific playlists (e.g. those tracks I want to play on a gig) available offline on this MacBook Air.
You can also use a mass storage device (SSD, USB-key, SD-card etc.) as the place where iTunes stores the downloaded (offline available) tracks. Note that this medium needs to be inserted whenever you work with iTunes on this machine).

So basically, what I am advising is to have ONE music collection as the master, and then making only selective playlists / tracks available offline on the devices where you need this music.

This simply is not possible without doing something bad to your iPad. Forget this completely.

I'm not a big fan of the Cloud for music but if your music collection is manageable in the Cloud then the advice from @kallekenkel is good.

I use Match for personal use on iPhone/iPad now they've increased the track limit from 25,000 to 100,000 etc but never risked it for tracks I DJ with. How do you cope with the cases where iTunes matches a track wrong so you think you have the right tracks on a device but it's actually something else? Also, what do you do about all the cue points you might have in tracks? Surely if you're downloading a matched track it won't have the traktor specific tags in it?

I think these are all valid concerns, Mike.
I don't encounter the wrong matches .. Most of my tech/house tracks are not recognised by iTunes anyways, so they are simply being uploaded as they are. I then import iTunes playlists from the iTunes node as Playlists into the collection node to to my analysing and grinding.

    Thanks Karlos.

Regarding an external USB stick. Could I use this to store my music, bypassing iTunes and access directly from TSP? Or does it need iTunes continuously?

    Thx

Appreciate the detailed answer and not a bad idea. My problem is that I don't want any music on my work computer out of various reasons. I am looking for something quick and easy on when I have friends over, don't really want to download the music first. I asked Karlos the same question, what about music stored on an usb stick, plugged into my MacBook Air? I assume that would work except some proper playlists?

    Thx!!!!

Ah ok, makes sense if most of your tracks aren't matched. Most of my stuff is regular pop and "classic" stuff for birthdays/weddings etc so iTunes matches most of them.

The way I handle music for DJing is to prep on my main PC. I then sync all the music along with the Tracktor/Serato/VDJ data to a couple of laptops using a sync program (GoodSync) via an external hard disk. When I'm done at a gig I'll sync the main laptop back to the PC to save any changes, history lists etc. The second laptop is just used as a backup in case of a problem with the main one. Been working pretty well so far and means I always have a backup of everything on an external hard disk.

If you have all your Traktor data on an external disk (incuding databases etc) then playlists will be available too. Well, it works ok like this on a PC, so I assume it'll work on a Mac too if you change the location of the Traktor folder in the preferences.
