You can try Activity Monitor on Mac (it's in Application > Utilities). But as D-One said – it's not accurate, and it sums up all cores, so you can have results like 260% CPU usage. But it can be used as a reference when testing different apps.

I assume you are using Live 10? I wonder if Live 9 was better in this matter.

i actually get better performance on my old trustee imac using Maschine as a plugin in Ableton, probably because of the multicore optimisation of Ableton. I think Ableton actually has a better VST/AU plugin optimisation overall , auto bypass unused plugins which make a huge difference .
If we actually could automate plugin bypass in Maschine it would make a huge difference , still bypassed plugins in Maschine still use a fairly high amount of CPU...I actually don't dig that supposed opposition between NI and Ableton , I think it is actually not true...What is true with Maschine developper is that they are not keen to implement standard feature that works well in every DAW and try too much to re invent the thing, even though part of what they did is actually revolutionary.....

I would argue with that. I need to test how this works now but when I used to have Dual Core CPU (few years ago) I was bypassing a lot and it was much relieving to my CPU. I didn’t like to delete plugins if I was still working on my track so I was rendering synths to audio and leaving them bypassed.

I do the same, I just noticed a bypass plugin use more than a removed plugin.
Still à bypass automation would be great for modest systems

That's true and expected for every music software. Bypass helps but it's not magic, the plugin is still there and in terms of Ram it makes no difference only for CPU.

it surely isn't but since I always had to juggle with my small ressources, that is something I always appreciated. I can't obtain great results in Ableton with that feature ....fortunately, looks like I am going to be able to build a seriously powerful setup within a couple of month and this type of concern should be history I hope..;)

A Desktop? Are you going to change to Windows?

not sure yet...would be happy with a dual boot for sure, I'll have a good use of both systems, still I have a preference for OSX, I find the drivers much more stable but I worked like 4/5 years on both platform so if stable I know how to get the result I want with any of them. I'll probably test both and settle on the one that is more stable

Most people have laptops that never leave their home/studio, i'll never understand why... A desktop is cheaper, upgradable, and much more powerful but only applies to Windows (or Hackintosh for the more adventurous type, like me:D)
