Yes I got my s8 yesterday and crashes on start up or s8 switch on reinstalled traktor 3 times . Still no joy . Sent support an e mail . If not resolved by the weekend its going back . Is it just windows 7 having the problem . I don't want the hassle of buying a new computer and setting it up . Whatever happened to plug and play

    Hello,
After much crashing, re-installing, headache, testing, customer support etc I finally found a solution to solve the boot crash, run crash, popping, load spikes etc... Disclaimer: this worked for me, hopefully it will for you.

I had the idea in one of my other support threads that it might have something to do with the S8 functioning as a second monitor... turns out I was on to something. NI tech support didnt have a working answer, but they did get me in the neighborhood of what might be causing all the problems.

It is a video issue. I had noticed a lot of people having the crash issue seemed to be on computers using the i5 intel architecture. Without a lot of needless techno babble I'll simplify for those who want to know what is going on... Basically intel worked with the 2 major graphics card manufacturers (Nvidia & AMD) to make something called "Optimus Technology". What that does is use the integrated video card for low graphics processing to extend battery life when not plugged in. NI tech support pointed out my HD4000 integrated video driver was out of date. It was but updating it did not fix my crashing. My Laptop has a GTX560 video card, that this Optimus technology only allows to be turned on for heavy GPU (graphics processing). Traktor does not need to use the video card, as the onboard is much more efficient in energy conservation. However, in my configuration, external video is handled by the Nvidia card. I had an ah-ha moment when I realized this.

In a nutshell the S8 is, among other things, an external display, & my laptop cannot offload the video to the S8 when it thinks that the display needs to be handled by the integrated video causing a conflict & crash. I am sure NI will write a more effective driver at some point, but for now there is a simple work around:

    1) update your drivers... its just a good idea (although maybe not necessary)
    2) get into your graphics control panel (not the intel one if you have it) for me its as easy as right clicking on the desktop (windows), going to Nvidia control panel (or catalyst control panel for AMD users)
    3) go to "manage 3D settings" (not sure where this is on an AMD)
    4) On the global settings tab Select "High-Performance NVIDIA Processor"
    5) Go to Program Settings Tab
    6) Under "Select a Program To Customize" click add
    7) Go to your Traktor.exe file (either search or if you use the default instal it will be in Program Files/Native Instruments/Traktor 2/ )
    8) Click Open
    9) Select High-Performance NVIDIA Processor in the dropdown

Voilla! You should not crash anymore.

The Only drawback is traktor will now use battery MUCH faster. Although I firmly believe you should never operate under battery alone, so for me at least it is a non issue.

    I hope this helps!
    Cheers!

I'm having the same problem. I am running Windows 7, 32-bit on my laptop. Every time I turn on the Kontrol S-8 traktor crashes. I installed traktor on my wife's laptop which is running on Windows 8 and the Kontrol S-8 worked just fine. There seems to be a problem between Windows 7 and the S-8.
Emailed customer support about the issue Nov 22 but still haven't heard from NI. Look's like wright now the only solution is using it with Windows 8.
Has anyone found another solution to this problem yet?

You were right. I installed traktor on my desktop which also runs on win 7 and I didn't have the crashing problem. I am running win 7 (64 bit) on my desktop, on my laptop it's win 7 (32-bit). Don't know if that has anything to do. Might be my graphics card that isn't compatible. My graphics card is a Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family. I have tried updating the drivers but still no luck.

Do you know how to do all these steps on a "Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family" graphics card? I've tried following step by step but can't figure it out. The settings are different. Any help would be appreciated.

Ni should put an mark on s8 saying not reliable on windows.... but they sell it as one that works. They don't seem to have much of an standard or simply don't give a **** about windows users. It would be better if they just didn't sell it for windows.

Hi guys just an update . I tried something today that might be of help.
on taskmaster under processes I put priority of traktor above normal. And a 2 hours gig with no crashes. Might help some but to be honest I think I need to do a 4 hour gig before I can say for sure it has helped. Another thing i bought a power surge prtected/power conditioner power extension I used also. Softwares can crash because of bad power too (music equipment). It costed 30£. Let see what happens next.

I have isolated a fault with the power in general. If I even touch the power button it affects the power and causes usb drop out and crash. Can anyone else confirm a power issue causing drop out?
