I've been obsessively trying to improve my audio and tonal quality for my next would-be album and want some constructive feedback. Now I'm not quite satisfied with the metal presets in GR4 so this is one that I've spent a good deal of time putting together so hopefully it sounds like I put in the effort.

Heres a demo of my metal tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIZv9nb1QWI

What aren't you satisfied with? It sounds outstanding to me! It's not thin like a lot of scooped tones tend to sound to me, and it seems very tight and percussive. What do you think it's missing? Can you share your set up?

Thanks guys, truth is I'm very very obsessive/compulsive about my audio quality and try very hard to make it sound as professional as possible so it helps to get feedback on it so that I don't miss anything.

    Setup is as follows:
    -------------------------------
Gain booster (Max Boost): This I have set up as a toggle switch, only turned on in certain lead situations.
    -------------------------------
Cry Wah: Also setup as a on/off switch.
    -------------------------------
    Mezone Distortion (vol+3.1dB, bass-3.2dB, mid-6.1dB, mid freq 638Hz, treble+7.1dB Distortion+30.6dB): No description needed here.
    -------------------------------
Studio Reverb (wet 53.1%, predelay 186ms, roomsize 10, bright 10): Toggles on/off, used for lead/solo parts.
    -------------------------------
Pitch Pedal: Toggles on/off, used for divebombs and for when I need whammy.
    -------------------------------
Control Room: Really gives my tone that clean punch.
    -------------------------------
    Graphic EQ: Finishing touch.

    Check this out:
    http://www.romeoknight.net/wordpress/audio/RomeoKnight-Mageau.mp3

The style is New Metal if anything and quite more rockish than metalish in the solo parts but I think soundwise not really distinctable from an actually miked amp.
Guitar and bass: GR4, drums: Superior Drummer 2 with Metal Foundry Extension, production in Cubase 4.

just an observation, the guitar track at 28 seconds could be brought to the fore a little more, ie: a little louder in the mix, very good though, well done, keep it up, i'd be interested in giving your finished work a listen. the drums were used with an application ? if so which one ? is there a bass guitar in there ? if so is it a virtual bass ?

If you're referring to my track, the drums I used an old drum machine that sounded crappy, but I really liked the easy to use interface. So what I did was just replace the drum hits with ones that I bought and thats what I've been using for drums. Also for bass I play bass guitar so I use that as well.

Working on a new album and at the moment recording a new song which should be seen publicly in a matter of days, until then my latest track from my new album entitled "Enslave the Population" can be heard here, thanks for the feedback: http://www.myspace.com/shivmicahdevereaux

Nice trash, sounds like what i search for, some kind of fear factory drum/guitar combo, very efficient. Congrats

For the critique, middle part is usefull for a quiet translation, maybe more reverb and loudness for this part, some kind of disturbing ambiance would cut with the brutal intro and end. For me, every part should be as qualitative as the intro, such as Buckethead style that never let us breathe :D

Wow! Very nice. Is that just one guitar or layered? Has a pretty raw sound to it, especially in the slower part. But, I am listening with some small headphones. I think if you were to get some better drum samples, it would make it sound even bigger and better.

^Thanks, um that particular track has 2 guitar tracks and a third that comes in later.

Anyways like I mentioned before I have a new song entitled "Enslave The Population" and I think I've gotten a pretty good guitar sound on this track after making several tweaks which can be heard here, thanks for the feedback: http://www.myspace.com/shivmicahdevereaux

Your new track has a good sound. The guitars jam.

Are you using only GR4? I only have the LE version and finding out that I don't think it's going to cut it.

Thanks, I use GR4 pro and then I mix and master using Sonar Producer.

But you're not actually going to use Guitar Rig 4 on the actual album are you? I just use it for rough ideas, but i would not put it on a release as the fidelity is simply not there to be acceptable to be on a professional CD release.

With that said, your rough tracking tone is great!

ya not too bad... goiod work... but with an axe fx you don't have to tweak for months to get tones lie that... if you knwo what you are doing in metal tone then you can get those tones out of an Axe Fx in a second. If however, you do decide to tweak for months on an axe fx then you can get whey better tones.

Because another thing you should know is that the Axe FX models many tube stages. Guitar Rig 1-4, and all the other modelers only model one tube stage (except for revalver - but the problem is that tweaking too much on Revalver to get your desired tone often makes it very noisy. Nothing comes close to the Axe FX - its light years ahead of all other modeling including that far ahead of Line 6.
