I have seen that users of kontakt will be able to crossgrade to intakt when it arrives later this year. Does this mean that we as registered users get these products at a reduced fee and do we get to keep the products we are crossgrading from?
It sounds like a stupid question to ask but...

Yes, that's exactly what it means.

Intakt is going to have some features that Kontakt will not have, but as a registered user of Kontakt, NI will offer you the sister product at a reduced price.

There will also be the option to crossgrade to Kompakt, which will have a more compact interface and a different sound library.

You will always be able to keep the original product (and continue to update it with future releases). The crossgrade is just a discount for registered users.

    David,

The Intakt page says 99 euros for the crossgrade from Kontakt to Intakt...any idea how that exhanges to US $?

    Intakt looks fierce yo!

Euros are very roughly equal to US$, so assume about $99. I'm not sure how NI will handle the crossgrade process or the payment.
