I was wondering if any Cubase user would be kind enough to help me out, as I seem to be missing a crucial step in using Vokator as an insert effect using Cubase, as per the instructions in the manual.

To illustrate my problem, the following works absolutely fine when I use Vokator as a VIRTUAL INSTRUMENT.

    1. Add a MIDI track to a new Cubase project and record a simple scale of notes and a few chords.
    2. Add a Vokator virtual instrument by choosing Devices | VST Instruments ... Native Instruments > Vokator VST_SY
    3. In the virtual instrument properties, pick Demo Presets > Classic Vocoder
    4. Set the output of the MIDI track to VokatorVST_SY

Clicking Play makes some nice Vocoding sounds, using the recorded scale and chords.

However, as a VST EFFECT, the same thing makes what sounds like horrible monotonic random sounds...

    1. Create a group track (Project | Add Track | Group Channel)
    2. In the group track Inserts section, add an effect (Native Instruments | Vokator VST_FX)
    3. Pick Demo Presets > Classic Vocoder
    4. DUplicate the MIDI track created above and set its output to VokatorVST_FX
    5. Mute the original MIDI track

    Yikes! It sounds terrible.

You might ask why I'm doing this, but it was to be the first step in using MIDI to drive Vokator with a recorded audio track and I seem to have fallen at the first hurdle.

I'm probably missing something simple, but I'd be grateful for some clues.

    Thanks very much.

I've been experimenting with this and it seems that in Cubase, Vokator does not appear to work correctly as an insert effect if *any* Virtual Instruments are loaded in a project. This is easily demonstrated on my PC by doing the following.

File | New Project | Empty
Project | Add Track | Group Channel
Expand the Inserts tab for the group channel
    Add effect Vokator_VST FX
In Vokator: Import | Presets | Classic Vocoder
Set Vokator Options | Vocoder MIDI channel to OMNI
Project | Add Track | Midi
    Set out: VokatorVST_FX
Click the MIDI track and record some chords

You should be able to hear Vocoded sounds with Vokator working as an insert effect.
Hit PLAY and it will sound fine.

However, load *any* virtual instrument to your list of devices and it will not sound correct.

    Devices | VST Instruments
Add *ANY* virtual instrument that you like

You will hear some very weird noises.

Remove the Virtual instrument and it will sound fine.

A problem when using Cubase SE. Not a problem in Cubase SX3.
