D2 1st impressions

Since there is no Forum thread for the D2, i will post my 1st impressions here (mainly based on using the remix decks:

overall: Amazing, big step forward for producers using Traktor live (cant wait making stems of my own songs !! - NOT implemented yet though)

Size: a bit too big, they could have gone with 80 % of the size

What does not make sense/ improvement request/Bugs:
There are 2 rows of 4 pots, the top one with centre dent and the middle one without:
the top ones are assigned to the FX, well actually only to Fx1 (not clear if and how to change it)
- The posts are standard in take over mode, which is a shame cause u have to make an extra rotation before somethign happens
- assigned to fx 1 only (for now?)

The middle ones without the centre dent: have 5 functions:
-fx send (on remixdeck per slot),
- duplicate of the FX settings (same as top knobs)
-midi (not assignable yet)
- filter (why issnt the filter assigned to the rotation knobs WITH the centre dent ?)
- pitch (remixdeck per slot) So Cool!!

Loop & Freeze Buttons: Great feature, they just have a buggy response (aka not really in sync)

Touchstrip:
Please let us assign our own functions it, right now it is only tempo & scratch.. loveto assigne it to beatmasher Fx Fi.

u can browse and select on title artist etc., but please let us save the search preference, now u have
to do an xtra action before u can select in the right preference


I miss loop-recorder functions (Shift Loop would be a great addition)!!
Missing the ability to make custom assignments
Midi control not working
With my F1 u can trigger an empty slot in the remixdeck which stops the one playing, does not happen with the D2 (shift + clip trigger does the job)

BUGS:
when ur page scrolling, Sometimes the clipview only refreshes after a clip launch, leaves an empty clip with no filter in the screen

! The endless pots cut use a adjustable sensitivity curve: right now they do not move with minimal rotation & are not really linear for my taste

 

Hello and thank you for your review ! I dont have a D2 Kontrol but I got a S8 - I think the midi control is working fine, but only with external gear ( not inside Traktor)

 

but there is no mid out on the D2.. so this is for routing into ableton for instance?

 

Is the actual D2 manual posted anywhere? All I can find is the Setup Guide, and I'm looking to get a bit more detail on some of the specifics before I lay out the cash...

 

Virtual midi Port ... not a hardware port.... if u need a hardware port - the normal setup got them becaue it is - D2 + Audio 6/8/10

 

i actually tried it out, ableton does not receive midi infor from this setting. Traktor does, there is just no(t yet a) way to assign: like thru d2 user

 

Very nice review... thanks for sharing. What type of music do you play and what other hardware do you use with the D2?

 

My friend and I were both looking to buy a D2 each, but waited until we saw some reviews and test videos. Now having seen some, there seems to be a MAJOR issue with the unit not being able to let you split screen between Deck A & Deck B !! Im now starting to see quite a few people who have already got a D2 moan about this problem, and people like myself who were just about to buy one now decide not to. I really love the look of the unit, and love what it can do, and would buy one tomorrow if only the A - B split screen issue can be sorted out. I can see how having two units would be amazing, and that at home you could have room for two and a mixer, but in the real world there is not going to be room in the average DJ booth for you to set up two of these. And so Im guessing most Traktor users would only buy one unit and use it like a X1/F1. So basically the point Im trying to make is, I really want one, but won't be getting one until the A - B split screen issue has been resolved. Maybe a software update in the near future ? Can someone from NI please comment on this point please ??

 

it basically divides between deck A and C // so the split screen shows (deck select button right under) the selected deck bigger with the names of the remix slot clips and the not selected deckonly waveforms.

i also do not understand the choice for an A + C configuration. and hope it will be user adjustable in the NEAr future.

 

I'm being advised by people who have got a D2 to stick with using a X1 until NI sort the problem out.

 

You switch between a/c b/d by pressing shift but this is not ideal when using only two decks mostly a/b

 

press shift then deck b if you are on a/c
works here

 

So if your using just one D2 ...are you can not seamlessly switch between deck A & B?

 

No, you have to press shift. a/c yes but not a/b

 

To be precise, you have to press: SHIFT + DECK + B in order to change

I don't own a D2 but could you not simple re map this to make this easier to go from deck a to b with a push of a button?

 

Anyone notices a bug with the loop rotate knob: somewhere in theprocess of using it, it goes from toggle to hold, and no way to return

So if you use A/C, and have both A&C as track decks you should have in split screen mode, A on top, large view of the waveform, and C under that but the waveform is a bit smaller ???, And then because your using A/C mode, if you just hit the DECK button the screen SHOULD flip to C on top as a large view, with A on the bottom in a small view ??????? Is that right ?????
