    Yeah. There are many "DJs" who are totally out of their waters when their cartridges start slipping across the vinyl, and the only thing they would need to do is clean the needle. But no. Off to rant about the "crappy equipment" is in order. Even though their own dusty vinyl caused the issue.

    So I totally understand where you are coming from. </sarcasm>

    Ah man your not kidding. I used to be the guy that sorted out the DJs and bands for 2 venues that were part of the same company and i would go in the day and prepare the DJ booth for the nite depending on what was needed and i was constantly been rung up by the manager with problems especially if the room was hired by some people for a party:

    Manager - "Hey Karlos the DJ cant get the CDJs to play thru the system"
    Me- "Is he playing upstairs"
    Manager- "Yes"
    Me- "Has he selected CDJ on the Mixer its probably on Decks theres a selector above each channel Fader"

    Its a 2 channel Mixer with 2 cdjs and 2 TTs connected with stickers that say 1-CDJ 2-Deck1 -- 3-CDJ 4-Deck2 ....aaaaarrrggghhh..!

    Manager- "Hey Karlos the people who hired the room have a DJ but he has no headphones or carts or slipmats can you bring some down"

    Its not the managers fault he runs the pub. Its working like this that you realise that a LOT of DJs have got no idea about the basic knowledge of equipment.
    I expect ANY dj who trys to get gigs to be able to take apart and set up the basic setup of decks/cdjs/mixer/monitor with their eyes closed but many just cant.

    Imagine you've already got 2x CDJ-1000's and a mixer, both of which you know in & out.
    now you want to try traktor and maybe traktor scratch, luckily for you NI have made it possible for you to use traktor without buying an all singing all dancing midi controller (although you can add one later on finance allowing) and use the familiar DJ format that is traktor scratch, without having to buy vinyl decks.

    I'm catching your point... But is Traktor much more efficient than 2 CDJs? In my case I'm using Laptop/controler to be able to rely only on MY equipment and just have to put one Power and one audio plug :) If I had 2 CDJs available at every party I play at, I would not bother taking a computer. :)

    If it was, Tiësto would be using it.

    Make that 4 CDJs + EFX1000. That would barely be equal to Traktor. CDJs are great but Traktor is in any way more efficient.

    I wonder why he is apparently not on DVS. It seems most big time DJs are actually quite open towards using systems like Traktor or Ableton.

    Why ? Maybe he just isnt interested in DVS.
    Maybe Traktor IS more efficient than 2 CDJs but Tiësto just loves his CDJs to much to move across to DVS.

    I dont think Tiësto is the litmus test on what medium is the most efficient.

    Where are you gathering this information from?

    I can only speak for the underground house scene, but most big name djs we've had down to play have been extremely interested in software with controllers/DVS, and a good percentage of them are already using Serato.

    At least I know why Sasha uses Ableton live to mix.... he can now beatmatch tracks :)

    Watching Sasha do an Ableton set was a lesson of how not to play music in public.

    Awful, tedious, self-indulgent twaddle.

    Interesting arguments on both sides. I have just started playing what i have been listening to for eyars and years. I could not imagine starting completely digital. Got turntables and TS. Otherwise i would have felt i would be missing something major, i would never actually be a dj if i did not know how to touch the vinyl. Let's not let it die ;)

    Vinyl records as a control medium can and will die in time as it should, BUT, not before a thoroughly comparable analog to vinyl comes to the fore. We have analogs today but none so far including are a perfect match, they are good but not yet good enough. When systems are in place that make the "must mix with vinyl" issue mute on all levels.

    A few thoughts

    Learning of vinyl seems to be holding back as many people as it is helping. Many of them are still using stickers on the records for scratching; instead of looking at the screen. Manual (literally) control of the music is important. I have found that learning on a smaller surface will actually give one a more precise feel than if they had learned on a larger record.

    I think that can be a good thing. I use both. It comes down to personal choice. I definitely prefer vinyl to midi control, but there are things that are not possible with vinyl that midi controllers offer. Having the option of either or both is a great thing about Traktor.

    The main reason I went to a DVS, is searching for music, is just soo much easier. I'm sick of getting that idea, then ransacking my crackes, and cd books to find the track I'm after.
    Its just nice an simple to search for it on the pc, then load it with the controller, and mix with the timecodes.

    I have a hybrid setup, 2 turntables, mixer, but I also use a midi controller for searching tracks, selecting tracks, and when the need calls for it, loops and effects.

    The ability to take ALL my music with me on a gig, and not have to bring the boxes I can carry only.

    Searching/file hosting & saving my back carry vinyl all over the place, was enough to sell me on a DVS. Started with Torq, it's fine, works, but doesnt like any midi controllers apart from the xponent (jog wheel issues) and you have to setup a poor mans browser using Bomes midi translator, so I went to Traktor, and I'm one happy man.
    If I'm feeling lazy, I can just take my contoller, laptop, audio 4dj, and away I go :)

    Could be wrong, i think the question was more;
    "why use timecode when you already have traktor and maybe a midi controller?"
    as opposed to;
    "why use timecode instead of normal vinyl?"
