Do i need an X1 if i get the S4 kontrol?

Hey,

I just have a pretty simple questions. I bought an x1 kontrol and a vci-300 to use with my traktor pro, but only now realized that the vci300 is not compatible. I'm planning on returning it for the slightly more expensive s4 kontrol.

Im just wondering if the x1 serves any purpose for mixing once I have an s4 kontrol, or if i can just return it as well.

sure it does, you can use it to access the 8 cue point at once, to play with fxs, remap it like you want (say for deck C&D. I would'nt live without myself, i use 2 with the S4.

 

How are you using the X1's?

I use my X1 for FX 3 & 4 (top rotarys/buttons)and the hotcue buttons at the bottom 8 for A & 8 for B i've remapped to pull up different beatmasher /gater and LFO amounts instantly for beat juggling inside a playing track.... this way when you exit your fx mash up, the track underneath the FX is still playing in phase with everything else ... oh and i've got 2 of the buttons mapped to the fantastic freeze delay...!

 

so FX 1-2 on the S4 + 8 hotcue on the X1 + sample on s4 ?

No ...the bottom 16 hotcues (8 for each deck) i've remapped to activate certain FX and FX amounts while holding down the button..... mainly beatmashers set at different rates !

The bit you don't understand is-
say your playing a track and you activate a beatmasher which grabs a loop and loops it at different lengths depending on how much you adjust the amount with the rotary but it does'nt stop the track you've grabbed it from... it keeps playing underneath and when you deactivate the beatmasher the song drops back in at the place you decide ....ie it hasn't stopped the track or changed the phase of the song..!

wow this is quite had to put into words.... if you try it you'll know what i mean...!

if you mash up say a chorus you can just deactivate your FX as the chorus ends and the next verse will begin..!

My head hurts...lol

 

Makes perfect sense to me.

I use one X1 to control individual filter and volume for the sample slots, FX banks 3 and 4, cues 5-8 and various other super knobs and buttons. It's based mosyly off this mapping Rainer did.

I recently passed up on a second used X1 that I'm kind of regretting now.

 

yeah... tried rainers mapping but found i was'nt using the sample banks enough to warrant wasting buttons so i remapped it slightly...!

thinking of remapping the lot anyway and using my pad kontrol for the single FX triggering... gonna have a go tonight..!

For no good reason I prefer the X1 fx knob layout. So both X1 for effets, so I have the total control on the 4 fx slots. Also use to access the whole 8 cue point at once on each deck.

For the sample decks, I use an LPD8, this way, even if way overkill and often useless, I have a total control of each sample slot Volume, filter etc etc etc.

For deck C&D I also have a pair of DN-SC2000.

I know, I have to much toys on this, the whole mapping is still a work in progress.

 

you can't have enoguh gadgets in my opinion ...... the more buttons.. the better...lol..!

I'm in the process of remapping my X1 right now building on Rainer's mapping. I'm intrigued by how you use your effects mappings - would you share your tsi so we can see how you do it?
